Still one of my favourite films, loved it as a kid. It's probably the one that started me on the road to loving horror movies. i really enjoyed seeing all the different Universal monsters appearing in the film, combined with some nice action and kids kicking ass. Practical effects are great like you say Godzilla.

I'll need to have a look and see if it ever got a really good BluRay release over here.

Godzilla vs King Kong - 5

Rather disappointed in this, it’s little more than a visual effects real albeit quite a spectacular one for the sight of a monkey and a dinosaur punching around. This visual style is by far the worst of all of these films, as it looks quite plasticky throughout. Human characters are also entirely redundant bar a token quick problem solve in the final 5 minutes which are entirely contrived.

I enjoyed the first Godzilla and Kong Skull Island is good, KotM is a bit naff and this might pip that due to the visuals but it’s not a patch on the first two which at least have other stuff going on beyond the punching.

Godzilla vs Kong was good, completely ridiculous and makes less sense the more you think about it but that's exactly what it should be really. I do think KotM was better though.

Everything with Millie Bobby Brown and her group was completely pointless and could have easily been cut. The tech the humans have in this is insane compared to the 2014 Godzilla, anti-grav ships and instant fuel downloads? The human body count in this one was also insane, almost entirely killed by the two 'heroes'

The Sound of Music

Talking with the wife I realised I had never actually seen what is regarded as one of the greatest classic films beyond the first 10 minutes or so. I enjoyed it, it does a good job of slowly building the ominous arrival of the Nazis in the background and the scenery is incredible if nothing else.

It really is, i've seen it in real life (the mountains around Berchtesgaden and the eagle's nest) and it is something very special.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - 6/10
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - 5/10

Yeah more or less what I remember them being. The second film is pretty flawed but there's still a good sense of adventure and it adapts a lot of great scenes from the book pretty well.

The last film, while not terrible, is really all filler that Jackson and the three (!) other screenwriters shat out; I was dying from second hand embarrassment during many of the dumber action scenes. Doesn't fit the tone of the book at all, but I'll admit it has nice moments. The necromancer/sauron stuff from this entire trilogy was just awful pointless filler and felt bizarrely cheap; Dol Guldur comes off to me like more of a collection of sets than an actual place when compared to Mordor from the LOTR films. Azog's inclusion in these films still doesn't make sense (since when do orcs live that long?) and in general the rendering of orcs in cgi is pretty awful looking, but the last fight between him and Thorin is pretty cool. In general the character of Thorin was captured quite well in this film.

Watched Godzilla vs Donkey Kong again (might as well try and get my monies worth for £16 48 hr rental). I can't disagree with much of the criticism but I really enjoyed it. I liked thehollow Earth stuff the most.

Also that ending with The Hollies, Breathe :wub:

Kong: Skull Island 8/10

Thought this was great. Action sequences were brilliant and some of the shots were fantastic. A Vietnam Kong film was a great setting (although no "Viet Cong" joke?! Come on guys, was right there!) and they really had fun leaning into it. Characters were pretty underdeveloped as usual in these things but there were some great lines and John C Reilly was hilarious as the comic relief. Better than I thought it was going to be, really.

Mulan Live Action 7.5/10
Fun and beautiful looking film with plenty of cool action scenes.

Godzilla King of the Monsters 6.5/10
Some fun Monster on Monster action but the human stories were too boring.

Jerry Maguire - you had me at 6/10
At Worlds End - 7/10 worst of the cornetto films but still good.

Halloween 2 - 4/10 boring and takes away from the original

Halloween 3 - season of the witch - 10/10

Absolute classic film with a brilliantly dark evil plan and plenty of gore.

Halloween 4 - 7/10 pretty good and well made.

Halloween 5 -5/10 too much child actor screaming and when did Michael learn to drive a car? Since he had been locked up since he was a small child. Also don't blow up a character in part 4 and have him come back in part 5 with some small scars. Would be ok if they did this with Michael, doesn't work as well with a middle aged man.

Antebellum

Not sure what to make of this. I don't think it really achieves what it wants to and is ultimately disappointing. Can't help but feel the M Night Shyamalan vibes, circa 2004...

Train to Busan presents: Peninsula - 6/10. A so-so sequel to the original. Entertaining enough in its own way. Watchable but nothing special.

Extraction

A pretty good and gritty action film with some clever CG/camera work that makes the shots look like they are uninterrupted during the combat scenes that flow from rooftops into street fights into car chases etc. I'll probably forget about it in a couple of weeks but it was enjoyable enough at the time.

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 8/10, This is the worst LoR films, partly driven by the book, partly driven by directorial choices. Despite being the longest it's the least interesting.

The scenes in Osgolaith(?) are wasted, I don't really understand what's going on and why
The ending is too long- where exactly are the Elves going- I'm not sure it's particularly well explained in the films
The Deus Ex Machina of an army
Some stuff which should have been better explained, the cloaks/elven bread etc (my girlfriend who has read the books explained them to me)

Captain America Civil War 8/10- Has a fairly interesting premise (though I'm not sure it's given justice- maybe let Aaron Sorkin have a go?) and the Airport scene is entertaining.
