It's not really explained in the film or main sections of the book.

The Elves time in Middle Earth is over and they are crossing the sea to the Undying Lands. Basically the Tolkien universes version of heaven/Valhalla. The "Gods" (they aren't really Gods but it's close enough) live there and the Elves are going to live with them.

Mortals are not allowed to go there, Frodo and Bilbo have been given a special exemption and even then they are only going to an island nearby, not the actual Undying Lands.

So they have to live for eternity with just each other for company? Why the strawberry float would they want that?!

I think it's fair to say some of the theological aspects of LotR perhaps aren't quite as well-realised by Tolkein as the events in Middle Earth itself, although the Silmarillion goes into it in some more detail (but even then I still don't think the subject is quite as deftly handled).

It's really intriguing though. You get the sense he would have explored it much further if he'd had more time.

It wasn't one shot because locations were all over the place and safety issues, but they did a good job of hiding the cuts

Yeah, I think the cuts were a little noticeable although to be fair I was looking out for them having read about it before. Doesn't change what a brilliant action sequence it is though :datass:

The Kid Detective

My favourite movie of the year thus far. This is a debut feature for the writer and director, starring Adam Brody as the titular lead. It's a surprisingly well-balanced mix of dark humour and a murder mystery, where the main character is a former 'child detective' now eking out a living in a town that is fed up with him and whose parents want him to make a real living. Things change when an actual, dangerous mystery lands on his desk - the case of who murdered a local teen that was stabbed 17 times. The comedic editing is masterful and the ending will stick with you a long time.

Who? The Elves or Frodo and Bilbo?

Frodo and Bilbo will still die and will have plenty of company.

The Elves will have their entire civilisation for company, plus the Gods/angels that live there. No difference to them staying in Middle Earth, just no annoying humans and dwarves around to piss them off.

Pretty much. Although Elves will be there and Gimli will join them later on.

Star Wars Force Awakens - 7

Was quite excited to watch this again as it's been a few years and was curious to see if my opinion had changed, particularly after the lackluster sequels.

It hasn't, it's still just fine.

Star Wars the Last Jedi - ****

Actually enjoyed this much more than I was expecting, after I found the previous one a bit disappointing. There were some much more interesting things happening in this, compared to Force Awakens feeling like a remake of New Hope. The Rey and Ren stuff was great, felt like some genuine conflict going on for both characters, and Finn and Rose's sections were good, too. Nice to see a bit of critical economics going on when they're looking at the wealth in the galaxy and the direct implications that has about what that means prosperous areas of the galaxy make their money from, rather than just having there be rich planets that are nice, and poor planets that are bad. Also glad they went the way they did with Po's attempted mutiny. Would have been a bit rubbish if it just turned out him being brash was the right thing in the end.

Still plenty of dumb stuff in there, like the half arsed attempts to make it a bit funny, magic Leia, the need to shoehorn in old characters like Chewie, R2D2, etc. but I guess that's just inevitable with a Star Wars film.

Got Rise of Skywalker left to watch, sadly fully aware of what people's general opinions of that were, but I'll try not to let it colour my viewing.

My Octopus Teacher - 9/10, available on Netflix

A documentary about a man who befriends an octopus. Sounds like a really odd premise, but has some absolutely stunning underwater footage, and is surprisingly moving.

Some of the scenes that were captured are just incredible. Thousands of hours of footage edited and trimmed down to just the gold.

It also discusses the divers depression/mental health issues, so be prepared if this might affect you.

Bill & Ted Face the Music - 4/10

Really cringe and unfunny, Winter & Reeves phone it in, story didn’t really make any sense, saw the plot twist coming from so far away I’m not actually sure it is one, gooseberry fool finale, awful writing. Gutted!

Angel has fallen 3/10

Utter guff but we stuck with it purely to laugh at it. The 'twists' were so obvious that you guessed them the second a character was introduced.

I bet X is really Y. Oh look he was.

Kid Detective - recommended on here I think. Thought it was pretty good, not quite amazing all the way through but had some great moments.

Palm Springs - Brilliant, absolutely loved it - I figured it was right up my street from the synopsis alone but I'm glad they did the premises justice and made something I enjoyed so much.

Godzilla vs Kong - 3/10

Bit gooseberry fool, really. Story was guff, and the fights had no sense of scale- when everyone's massive, nobody is.

Rules Don't Apply - 0/10

Jesus strawberry floating Christ, it's bad enough that we have to see Trump collaborator/enabler Steve Mnuchin's name pop up as producer in the credits of otherwise decent films, but now we actually have to endure his actual strawberry floating presence in the actual films themselves now. strawberry float this fascist, child-stealing piece of gooseberry fool, and his banana split wife who appears in this too.
Again, 0/10.
