Furiosa

5/10

Pretty disappointing stuff, for the reasons given in the reviews above. It’s a tremendous spectacle looking for a decent story, and a couple of the set pieces are really impressive and quite exciting.

I also reckon you could comfortably shave about 30 - 40 minutes off the runtime, but then I think that about lots of films.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

Dune: Part Two - 8/10

Great stuff, the story continues to pull me in even though it was slightly overlong.

The fact Furiosa is so poorly reviewed by you lot makes me think I am going to really enjoy it.

Thought Fury Road, whilst OK, was incredibly overated.

I didn't think Furiosa was as good as Fury Road but it was still a decent few hours. Looking forward to the four-hour fanedit of the two together in a few months.

The credits being made up of scenes from Fury Road is a weird choice, though. Is that meant to be showing that Furiosa's story continues for the tiny fraction of people who watched Furiosa with no previous Mad Max knowledge?

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 6/10 A film which almost has something interesting to say about choosing between friends and your kind. Almost...

Except Proxima is cartoonishly evil and no relationship evolves, May doesn't really form a bond with anyone to potentially betray (and never really has the option to betray anyone or be betrayed) and the ending is written by a writer who is mad they didn't take the eagles to Mordor.

Despite lacking any depth it manages somehow to be 2h30m

However it's still talking apes and it's fun enough in places. The original 1968 Planet of the Apes is still the best and I can't imagine how amazing the final reveal in that film was to audiences.

Are there any characters in it on the level of Caesar from the last Apes trilogy? It has some issues but I maintain Caesar and his arc make that a really great trilogy which I find to be underrated. (Although Dawn coming after Rise will never not be annoying).

As someone else who thinks Fury Road was overrated, Furiosa is slightly worse but not a bad film.

I went to see Furiosa yesterday and really enjoyed it, surprised to see such negative reactions! An easy 4/5 for me - certainly not as good as Fury Road, but that's a top 5 film of all time for me so there's lots of room beneath it.

It's a different style of film to Fury Road, especially given it's an origin story and follows a single character rather than focusing on a single moment, and it also feels very supplementary to Fury Road. It almost feels like a film adaptation of a comic book spinoff from Fury Road, or something like that, in that it is world building and contextualising, which I think is deliberate given the "Mad Max Saga" titling. The credits montage of Fury Road also makes it clear this isn't a standalone prequel, but an expanded story that you should watch afterwards.

That said it is at its best when its closest to emulating Fury Road with its extended chase/action scenes, so it can't escape from comparisons and does come off worse. They are still excellent though and well worth the price of admission!

The casting and performances are also spot on and it's particularly fun seeing Chris Hemsworth play the villain.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow (netflix) - 8/10

Really good fun, this should have been given a proper theatrical release.

I always love Tom Hardy doing a ridiculous voice though. And he's apparently at it again in some biker gang film.

Hardy's voice in the biker movie trailer is like someone doing a parody of him on SNL. It's so distracting.

Wish my image sig would work
