Is Pacific Rim any good? It is either that, or Superman I see tomorrow.

John Dies at the End - 7. Entertaining, but the "plot" provided too many questions. TBH, looks more like a pilot for a series than a film.

Yes?

See Pacific Rim.

It has a giant robot wielding a battleship as a sword.

Man of Steel - 8/10 Great film. I don't understand the criticism about it being too serious, it's the tone of which they went for, a bit more grounded. Put it this way it would have been cringeworthy if it had Avengers style. The other moans about Zod being Mr Angry Shouty, well it was in his nature. He was doing what he was bred to do. And finally as regards to the destruction and for Superman to be the 'keeper of the people' what exactly was he supposed to do against an army of super humans? Sit back and let them destroy the planet?

Star Trek is still my film of the year so far, but I really enjoyed this movie.

Expendable 2 - 6/10
Worse than the first. The plot was paper thin and the action was pretty poor. I think the cast was just too big

You went into The Expendables expecting a plot?

I was at least hoping for something like the first film. The action was piss poor too :fp:

The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - *****

Fantastic. Good to see Peter Jackson doing Tolkien justice after suffering The Hobbit twice over. He must have watched the original films before working on The Hobbit, so I'd like to know at what point he decided "This needs a whole load more CGI"

Watched some of the Oscar films over the past week.

Zero dark Thirty

I'm taking most of the 'plot' with a pinch of salt, but it made for an entertaining film. Much better than I thought it was going to be.

7.5/10

Life of Pi

Only Ang Lee film I had watched was Brokeback Mountain, but I'm aware of his other work. Visually a very impressive watch and a story I wasn't sure would translate well to film.

8/10

Argo

Thought Ben did a good job with this. Despite knowing the outcome, it still felt extremely tense. Thought they matched up the actors with their real life counter parts quite well too.

8/10

The Prestige

I knew about the Tesla bit of the plot going in but the I didn't even know there was the other trick.
It's a really good film, I liked how it worked like detective fiction without an investigator, presenting all of the elements of the mystery to the viewer and not relying on anything unmentioned for the final reveal. Wolverine was surprisingly good in his role as well.

Olympus Has Fallen = Under Siege + Die Hard/10 (7/10)

Clearly ripping off both of the above (and not as effectively either), some ok action sequences, but not jaw-dropping either.

3:10 to Yuma - 8/10

Inspired by my recent revisiting of Red Dead Redemption, thought I'd rewatch this film. A modern day classic Western. Great stuff.

Pacific Rim - **

Fighting scenes are good but it's sometimes hard to see what's going on. Charlie Day and Idris mummy strawberry floating Elba save the acting parts from being total tosh. Had the right sense of self-awareness but needed a better cast and much much MUCH better script.

Only Yesterday is definitely the best Studio Ghibli film. Perilously close to knocking Once Upon A Time In The West off my Number 1 spot at the moment.

I guess you could say that the film was... an Ace Venture. :shifty:
