Boring. strawberry floating Russians.

Peaky Blinders S4

Better. The last episode was kind of predictable, but I enjoyed it.

Series 3 was a slog I remember that much (not a lot else). Is 4 the one with Adrian Brody? That was a great series.

Living With Yourself (Netflix)

Enjoyed this a lot. It's a comedy drama starring Paul Rudd as a man who find his life in a bit of a rut and so decides to visit a spa that claims to make you into the "best version of yourself". Turns out that the spa actually creates a clone of the person with some tweaks to make them a happier and more positive person, and then they kill off and dump the corpse of the original ... except in Rudd's case he survives the killing process and so now there are two of him running around.

The set up isn't exactly groundbreaking but they pull it off well. Technically they handle the double Rudd scenes very effectively - these are well constructed to allow plenty of movement and interaction between the two of them and it's impressive compared to the days of just locking a camera off and having two characters confined to one side of the screen for this kind of thing. From a story perspective they also go in some more interesting directions than I was expecting - the fact there are two Rudd's isn't just played for laughs which is broadly what I had been expecting.

Would recommend it and hope that there is more to come from a second series.

8/10

In this vein:

Peaky Blinders S5

Too many 'music-video-esque-dramatically-walking-towards-the-camera-in-slo-mo moments. Also, very strawberry floating short.

Latest series of Peaky Blinders is like final seasons of Game of Thrones with them teleporting up and down the country between scenes.

That's basically the premise of an episode of Rick & Morty.

Hah, despite really enjoying Rick and Morty and having watched that episode several times I never made that connection!

Anyone watch The Capture on BBC1? I thought it started brilliantly, laying down its’ foundations well and raising questions on a subject (deepfakes and faked video clips) that is probably going to become more more of an issue in the next few years but ultimately failed to deliver. Kinda lost it’s way towards the end and I didn’t really like how it finished. Found the club scenes (filmed at a great venue though-Printworks in London) especially bad and stupid.

Not sure I’d be that bothered with a follow up series either but overall I did enjoy it.

Just started watching it but the first episode of Watchmen is surprisingly excellent. Like, really, really good.

I don't trust Lindeloff at all (he's an exceptional writer that cannot write conclusions) but this is an excellent start.

Yeah it was a great first episode. But like you say there is a risk of a Lost style Lindeloff disaster happening at the end of the series.

I wonder if they had to ask Robert Redford if he was ok with them using his name and image?

Almost certainly!

I love the slow coming into focus of worlds like seen here: seemingly nonsensical happenings that slowly get explained, often many hours after they originally occur. Then there are other things that probably won't be explained completely but that feed off of the graphic novel (of course policemen would wear masks and have official Masked Adventurers. Of course Rorschach became a neo-nazi idol.) There's also some extra material below that explains why computers and digital tech is so far behind our own world (people believed the start of the microchip age in the 80s was the reason for the Squid drop), what happened to Nite Owl II (he's in prison) and the impact the publishing of Rorschach's journal had (it essentially kick started the idea of fake news and was viewed by most as such)

Chuck - S1 - 4/10

How is this so much worse than I remember? :dread:

You can forgive both the pop culture and tech references being dated now but most of the comedy has not aged well at all either.

I really hope S2 turned things round because I remember moments of that being absolutely brilliant. There's every chance that most great TV from around 2007 is actually proper gooseberry fool, isn't there?

Wow Lizzie Caplan is a fantastic Annie Wilkes in the new season of Castle Rock. When isn't Lizzie Caplan fantastic though?

This is depressing to read, I remember Chuck very fondly. Thinking about it though, I can imagine the “feel” of the show to be ‘of it’s time’, for better or worse.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Netflix released a show in the next few years that scratches the same itch - similar to Fringe and Stranger Things - if there isn’t something already .
