Last TV series you watched and your rating

It happened! The Expanse FINALLY got its hooks into me. It was the episode where (I'm assuming) the bad guys infiltrate the Mars ship and the protags escape it on a rocket before it selfkerplodes. I mean... that was days ago and I haven't been back to it since, but I legit enjoyed that ep and will start dipping in and out of it more regularly.

Bly Manor was really good. I don't think it ever hit the momentum of Hill House, but it was still really good, and that penultimate episode was some of the best TV ever.

It's going to sound like a backhanded compliment but I was impressed by how much I liked it when I really don't like that style of ghost story on the whole. Ghosts being metaphors for loss and grief and repressed emotions and that strawberry floating annoying plot device of half the characters not knowing they're already dead is stuff that normally really turns me off a ghost story, and so the fact that I really enjoyed this is a credit to the writing, direction and acting. I'm a simple man, I like my ghosts angry, unexplained and in the background. Possibly of a recently closed bathroom mirror.

The only thing that did grate on me, and I think this really will be a personal thing, is that Hill House was based on The Haunting whose plot is basically 'This house is haunted so you should not go there' which gave the writers loads of freedom to build a plot that explores the characters. But Bly Manor being based on Turn of the Screw is, to me, much more plot-driven and so I spent a lot of time getting a bit frustrated at how long it was taking to just get on with it. I get that the story they ended up telling was in the end really quite different to TotS, but I suppose what I'm saying is that the early episodes didn't do enough to convince me that they weren't telling that story, so I just ended up wanting them to just strawberry floating hurry up and posses the strawberry floating kids.

Still, that's a very personal bugbear, I can't really fault it for not being the story I expected it to be based on the source material. It was still ace, but it wasn't quite as good as Hill House.

Ghosts (BBC). Series 1 & 2. Excellent, horrible histories for adults. I had somehow never heard of this so was able to watch both series back to back. Great fun and a Christmas episode is on the way too. Can't wait.

Yeah, I thought Ghosts was awesome.

I’ve recently just watched both series of Ghosts as well, really is fantastic. Didn’t know about a Christmas special, when’s that airing?

I don't think the date has been announced, not sure any Xmas TV has dates yet?

Rewatching Succession at the moment, it’s so good. A real shame it’s going to be such a long wait till S3.

I don’t think so and previously most Christmas specials air on Christmas Day (obviously) but these days you never can be sure!

Slasher S2 - 8/10
I liked this a lot more than season 1. Didn't have a clue who the killer could be and was pretty lost throughout but really enjoyed the ride. Expected the ending to be unsatisfactory but it surprised me and I think looking back there were clues, I just completely missed them.

Interesting - I preferred S1 because, like you, I identified the killer early but there were still plenty of red herrings.

I felt S2 was a little unfair on the viewer, because the average person has zero chance of figuring it out. I only figured it out late on (E5/6 IIRC) because I stopped watching to have a proper think and eventually ruled out everyone else. This is what I said earlier in this thread:

Hope you enjoy S3! In terms of difficulty in identifying who is responsible, it's somewhere in the middle of S1 and S2.

I do agree with the lack of signposting. There are some hints early on but I think you would only see them with hindsight. I had basically ruled everyone out and was half expecting the killer to be someone we hadn't even met, which would have been terrible.

With season 1 I took a guess at the killer in episode 1 and every subsequent episode it became more obvious I had got it right. I was actually hoping that in episode 6 or 7 my pick would be killed/ruled out and there'd be a surprise but it all played out as expected.

I guess in these shows I like the puzzle of trying to guess the killer but I prefer if the show outsmarts me with a plausible solution that I didn't see. S2 kind of did that even if wasn't completely fair.

Looking forward to S3, and I heard the S4 is currently filming

We need more whodunnits on TV. Still need to finish Slasher.

Community Season 5 - 7/10

After the appallingly bad S4, this was decent. Not up there with S1-3 but it had some good laughs.

Having Mike Ehrmantraut in it was a great idea. Mike :wub:

Yeah Buzz Hickey (lets face it he'll always be Mike!) was a good addition for season 5 even if he was a little underused. Co-operative Polygraphy (the one with Pierce's will reading) was probably the highlight of the season for me

Slasher S3 - 6/10
It was okay, and kept me intrigued throughout but the characters were awful. Everyone was a stereotype and annoying, and I was disappointed with the solution.

S2 > S1 > S3

I've just completed another viewing of The Office (UK).

I guess most people know the series inside out now and it has become - or perhaps always was - a tad divisive?

My favourite thing, though, is how - despite much of the series being cringe-inducing and uncomfortable albeit funny - it is wrapped up in a beautiful finale. Seeing things work out and Dawn returning to Tim just brings a smile to my face. For me it remains a super series.
