I've been watching Attack On Titan. I don't have a massive amount of experience with anime outside of Ghibli stuff and old Manga movies, and this always seemed to get decent reviews and top 'best anime' polls so with a free Crunchyroll trial I thought I'd give it a go.
For the most part, it's excellent. That setting is brilliantly realised, the world is mostly believable and the titans themselves are a great threat. The first series is split between some Rocky-style training and a climactic battle. Oh, and one fairly major plot twist which had me floored.
The second season is weirdly short, and they changed the theme tune to something more gooseberry fool, which was annoying. Nevertheless it's action packed and despite my initial concerns, turned into a really entertaining spectacle. The scenes in the forest in particular were great.
And then, the third season. With the change of theme tune to something even more gooseberry fool than the second season, and a shift to more exposition and less titans, the first half of this is SLOW. I was almost considering calling it quits, so I had a quick peek on IMDB to see if it got any better. That's when I saw this.
So I carried on. And there's an obvious point in the middle where things change (even the theme tune changes back to something half decent again). The action ramps up, the plot falls into place. And yeah, those three episodes are strawberry floating incredible. I mean, seriously, top-tier TV. The payoff at the end of the season was great too, and I find myself excited to dive into the next series (which I believe is the last one). It's definitely worth the investment, even if the quality of episodes is wildly uneven in places. The highs more than make up for the lows.
