Agreed, especially when trying to process the fact he had been going around knowingly putting many other men at significant risk of infection. He could reasonably be considered guilty of mass manslaughter, but then, aren't we supposed to be rooting for him?! Great to see complexity in this way rather than a more typically 'pure' leading character.

It's interesting you've read it that way as I took that scene to be a continuation of the deep sense of shame he's felt his whole life from being gay. When he says he gave AIDS to Donald by sleeping around and that he's guilty of killing men I don't think we're meant to really believe that, rather he's trying to justify to himself why he's ended up in his deathbed. Right as his homophobic parents burst through and ruin the chance for him to properly reconcile his feelings no less!

The series seemingly quite deliberately avoids the tired concept of Good AIDS vs Bad AIDS even when it's easy to see the two main characters who die from it as being more innocent and guilty. The reality, as Jill puts it, is that there isn't any point trying to look for a villain as all you'll find is some bloke. AIDS victims and the gay community were treated disgustingly at the time, and what hit me with this series more than any other AIDS story I've seen (and I'm not sure I can name another one based in Britain) was the sense of deep trauma gay people had to go through at the time as so many friends and loved ones died while the world pretty much looked the other way.
