It's starts very comedy-ish (and Seth McFarlane/Frat boy comedy) but that slowly disappears over season 1, and is pretty much gone in season 2. There's still some light moments - but it's properly a sci-fi show first, and a much close sucessor to TNG (or Voyager) than Discovery.

In fact I could tell you more about Orville's crew in 2 episodes than most of Discovery's bridge crew

The crew of The Orville are all great. They all get a decent stab at being the focus and while the captain and first officer are the main characters the rest are well fleshed out after season 1 ends.
If I had to choose one show to get the chop out of The Orville and Discovery I think I'd choose Discovery as The Orville just has more variety of story types and better characters.

I quite enjoyed The Orville, good turn your brain off tv and uve always liked Scott Grimes. Anyone know why they replaced the security officer?

Well that was pretty darn good - but it's very different from the source material (but then it has to be)

Most changes are pretty good and make the story work better (like those mentioned above) - and while it's still violent, gorey and sexy - it never feels as completely OTT as the comics. But one is just wierd though (episode 4 or 5 spoilers)

Sitwell being a woman? OK.

Sitwell being a woman Homelander simulates being breast feeding from AND wants to strawberry float? Wierd. Wierd. Wierd.

Still liked it and thought the characters were all well done/acted. Hughie gets adorkable just right, and Frenchie is...just...awwww

I'm not sure if we're meant to sympathise with the Deep or not. His arc was odd, and I'm not sure if it's meant to feel as redemption through change/growth, or redemption through suffering...either way it felt too kind to a rapist. The actor is doing is best though. And the dolphin scene had me in stitches

They're not really following the comic arcs obviously but the ending

Sitwell dead...and Becca alive and having Homelanders kid? That's such odd choice

When's series 2?

Just finished watching this myself.

With no familiarity with the source material I mostly enjoyed it.

Provides an interesting take on powered individuals (not heroes necessarily) and puts them in a believable real world setting with politicians and corporations attempting to manipulate them for their own agendas.

Some of the casting is very good. I particularly liked Frenchie, while Homelander certainly stands out.

There are a fair number of issues with the show though. I'm not sure how I felt about some of the graphic violence. Also some of the characters motivations and story arcs are less utilised or less successful than others.

I'd certainly be interested in seeing where a second season takes things though, as there's definitely a lot of potential. Probably a 7/10 for me.

I read the source comics after hearing about the series. They're...problematic.

I'm onto episode 2 of the show and the violence on show here is nothing, nothing compared to the comic which from the very start uses grotesque violence to, I believe, stand out. It serves almost zero purpose and it continues for the series' entire duration. The women characters are also sexualised to the point of ridiculousness, even as the narrative tries to subvert traditional female roles. Rape and semi-consensual sex are regularly depicted for little to no reason, as well as paedophila and none are handled particularly well.

For example, the relationship between the CIA director and Butcher. So far in the series it seems to be following an 'old flames' trope (though I understand this might change) but in the comic Butcher hate strawberry floats her every time they meet in some sort of bizarre blackmail situation.

The series is actually better than the comics so far (although I agree with Hexx and don't understand the genderswap of Stillwell, and Karl Urban's accent is all over the shop).

I watched the first episode of the Boys and it was really good, I enjoyed it! I love that this naturally does a whole lot of world-building and shows us what away from the MCU ideal, would likely happen if superheroes were real.

Tuca & Bertie - Watched this after reading about the fan disappointment that it had been cancelled after just 1 series. Overall I rather enjoyed it. The styling is a bit like Bojack Horseman, but the tone is generally a bit lighter and it has it's own sense of identity. Some very funny bits but it also touches on some pretty deep & relevant subjects, particularly for female viewers. A real shame I only discovered this after it was cancelled - don't recall seeing it advertised anywhere beforehand suggesting Netflix just didn't back it and instead left it to die. Would definitely recommend as a perfect binge watch with only 10 episodes at a little over 20 minutes each. 7/10

Stranger Things season 3 - 9/10

Already covered this in the ST thread, but yeah it was really good.

Norsemen season 2 - 9/10

Funniest show I've seen in years, such a subtle and bone-dry sense of humour. Plus their accents are just so damn likeable

"They made us do some... ravishing."
"Ravishing? As in... raping? Raping with your... willy?"
"Ya, it really got out of hand"

The Civil War – 9/10

After enjoying Ken Burns Vietnam series I added a load of his other documentaries to my watch list but never got around to watching them. I finally watched his American Civil War series and it is really good. Obviously it doesn’t have the video that the Vietnam documentary had, but it does have a lot of photos and writings from the era which help bring it to life.

Why is there no footage of the Civil War?! The US already had airports during the War of Independence in the 18th Century, you can't tell me they didn't have video cameras nearly 100 years later! :capnscotty:

The Boys - Season 1 - 9/10

I am not sure I have ever seen a show that has the word “banana split” said so often.

It’s not a realistic show, but it is probably what would happen if superheroes were real. The banana splits.

I've got two episodes left to watch and I've really enjoyed it so far.

Very reminiscent of the Reckoners series of books by Brandon Sanderson (group of 'norml' people take on evil superhumans who have taken over the world), albeit more violent and sweary and less teen angsty.

I've read a a few of 'The Boys' comics, I think about 3 volumes and I really liked it. Will read the rest (I didn't own them.a.few years back, but do now due to Humble Bundle) and then check out the show.

Attack on Titan S1 - 8/10

This was good. A bit melodramatic in places. But it has an awesome premise, and the action sequences were really cool to watch.

Attack on Titan S2 - 7/10

Not as good as the first one. It was a lot slower. The final episode was fantastic however, makes me excited to see S3.

Dat Mikasa though. strawberry floating hell, she's an ultimate badass.

Mindhunter season 2 9/10

And here was me thinking Stranger Things would be my favourite Netflix show this year... It's now been surpassed twice in the space of a month. First it was Dark season 2 which was just excellent and now this, a reinvention of an already excellent series that backgrounds all the troublesome issues with the first series and turns it into something akin to a 9 hour period remake of Se7en.

The first run of the show was good: great premise, great performances, excellent direction. But it all felt a bit piecemeal, like the whole thing was an excuse to get some of real life's worst monsters on screen in a dramatic way. The show revolved around the interview scenes and Kemper especially, a solid choice given the excellent performance of Cameron Britton. The second series still uses the interviews as thematic centrepoints but expands outward in a much more interesting way, delving into the lives of the three leads and using the showcase crimes as analogies to everyday (and sometimes not so everyday) trials and tribulations.

I also loved the bait and switch with BTK as the series rapidly leaves him behind to concentrate on the Atlanta murders, without letting the viewer forget that no, he's still out there doing his thing. I wondered how they were going to handle the fact that the real BTK was caught in 2005, and it looks like they're setting him up as the recurring villain of the piece. This is interesting in itself as, as the series states, he's not one of the big boys of the serial killer hall of fame, he's a wannabe, a copycat. It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out in the next few series (Fincher pitched the show as having 5).

But yes. One of the best shows of the year undoubtedly, in one of the best years for television I can remember.
