The Americans

It was an enjoyable ride and I'm glad that I watched it. Some great characters, solid writing etc. It won't threaten the top 10. Maybe the top 20.

Stranger Things - Series 3

Outstanding! Absolutely loved it. Even better than series 1 and 2 — will happily consume a fourth. Brilliant television; a modern classic.

Spectacular Spider-Man (2008)

Really good. Took a while to get into it but the writing is really smart, and though the art style can be a bit unimpressive at times the animation is really fluid when it matters. Sad there's only two series of it and that it'll never get continued.

This was good. A bit melodramatic in places. But it has an awesome premise, and the action sequences were really cool to watch.

Attack on Titan S2 - 7/10

Not as good as the first one. It was a lot slower. The final episode was fantastic however, makes me excited to see S3.

Dat Mikasa though. strawberry floating hell, she's an ultimate badass.

From what I remember, I really liked series 1 but there was a bit in the middle where the pace kinda went to a crawl. Watched it years ago mind, when it came out, and series 2 much more recently since there was such a gap between them. I'm also wanting to check out series 3 soon since I've heard it's even better.

And here was me thinking Stranger Things would be my favourite Netflix show this year... It's now been surpassed twice in the space of a month. First it was Dark season 2 which was just excellent and now this, a reinvention of an already excellent series that backgrounds all the troublesome issues with the first series and turns it into something akin to a 9 hour period remake of Se7en.

The first run of the show was good: great premise, great performances, excellent direction. But it all felt a bit piecemeal, like the whole thing was an excuse to get some of real life's worst monsters on screen in a dramatic way. The show revolved around the interview scenes and Kemper especially, a solid choice given the excellent performance of Cameron Britton. The second series still uses the interviews as thematic centrepoints but expands outward in a much more interesting way, delving into the lives of the three leads and using the showcase crimes as analogies to everyday (and sometimes not so everyday) trials and tribulations.

I also loved the bait and switch with BTK as the series rapidly leaves him behind to concentrate on the Atlanta murders, without letting the viewer forget that no, he's still out there doing his thing. I wondered how they were going to handle the fact that the real BTK was caught in 2005, and it looks like they're setting him up as the recurring villain of the piece. This is interesting in itself as, as the series states, he's not one of the big boys of the serial killer hall of fame, he's a wannabe, a copycat. It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out in the next few series (Fincher pitched the show as having 5).

But yes. One of the best shows of the year undoubtedly, in one of the best years for television I can remember.

Just finished it and yes, I agree about it being even better than S1.

I don't normally like watching shows about serial killers butv this really is great, I think the BTK stuff happening in the background was incredibly chilling even though we see very little of it.

Watched The Boys this week. Was really good and I'm not usually into super hero/comic book stuff (maybe thats why I liked it I dunno).

Not sure if laser gun babies are the best or worst thing I've ever seen.

Watched Attack on Titan S3 Part 1. Half of it was just ehhhhh. It felt like too great a tonal shift, the politics stuff I mean.

It does get back to being good.

Just finished S1 of Preacher.

It's been over 20 years since I read the comic but I can see many changes here in the TV series. Some I like, some I don't. Generally though I enjoyed the first season. Now Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy are on the road I'm hoping S2 takes things up a gear.

A 7/10 for S1

Conversely I have read the book several times and was somewhat disappointed by this.

It was really well cast (although Michael Mckean's Scottish accent is a frightening thing to behold!) with some fantastic performances throughout (although the kid playing Adam was a bit shite) and clearly a lot of care, love and attention had been put into how it looked and brought across everything that was in the original book (for the most part) but I think that was almost it's main failure. Whilst it is nice to get an adaptation which stays faithful to the book and with the firm hand of one of the authors overseeing the whole thing, that has led to the resulting series being somewhat bloated and seriously lacking in refinement of the pacing.

It's often annoying when something you love is adapted and they mess around with it too much, but this demonstrates that the opposite is not the answer - TV, film and books are all very different and there are good reasons to re-work something when adapting from one medium to another.

Good Omens works fantastically as a book, because books allow so much more time for introspection and can take more liberties with asides, and references and it's much easier to run several storylines concurrently in book form. Someone more au fait with what makes a great TV show should have been more heavily involved to spot where changes were necessary. That said I can forgive Gaiman, he agreed with Pratchett that any on screen adaptation should be faithful and can imagine put himself under immense personal pressure to hold that promise up after Terry's death.

Basically it's an impressively faithful transfer of the great book to the TV screen, but that in itself does not make it a great TV show.

I can appreciate that. I've no doubt had I read the book I would have probably felt as you do about the show. On the flip side, having thoroughly enjoyed the TV adaptation, I will be picking the book up.

With a few exceptions that prove the rule of course.

Started watching Luther.

Series 1

7/10

It was ok. A few interesting subversions (the immediate "She did it" in the first episode made us laugh) and the arc was pretty well done.

Series 2

4/10

We're only on episode 4 but this has taken a massive dive in quality. The first two killers are based on such rubbish concepts (one doing it for the art, the second a ridiculous D&D pastiche) and their crimes are so reveled in by the show that it's become difficult to take it all seriously.

A 4/10 for season means you'll be dealing in negative numbers by the time you hit season 5.

We watched the final episode of season 2 just now and I think we're done. The ridiculousness of the bomb-vest wasn't what killed it for us, rather it was the inherent comparison we both instinctively made to a similar set-up in The Bodyguard. The latter did it so, so much better that we were bored rather than tense.

I couldn't believe how gooseberry fool Luther was when I finally got round to watching it, having heard so many good things.

Really? I've not seen it in years but remember thoroughly enjoying it. Kinda scared to go back to it now.

Been watching Another Life and am about ready to abandon it, its basically a lesson in how not to make a decent sci-fi show.

There's far too much dodgy science like an alien virus which evolved in an entirely different environment to us somehow being able to infect humans resulting in the nervous system literally climbing out of someone's spine  and the crew are all utterly incompetent wankers who have in six episodes gotten five other crewmembers killed.

Its shite.

I couldn't take it any more after about 3 episodes as the crew are just so amazingly stupid and annoying.
They all act like spoiled, rich american schoolkids and seem to be on the brink of mutiny at all times for being given even the tiniest bit of work to do and they seem to need reminding every 5 minutes that they're on a mission to save the entire human race.

Also you just know the little girl on Earth is going to come up with some genius idea that will stop that alien crystal thing they're trying to communicate with and why she hasn't been told the likelihood of her mother not coming back from what is essentially a suicide mission is pretty low I have no idea.

It's easily the worst sci-fi show I'v seen in a long, long time.

Probably better than Star Trek, though.
