Did the Dexter thing have anything to do with the twist in the book, where the Dark Passenger was revealed to be an actual alien who was controlling the guy's murderous impulses?

If only the twist had been that.

In the last season there is a big hurricane and Dexter gets “killed” when trying to take his dead (or in a coma, I can’t remember) sister/lovers body out to sea. Oh no he’s dead! And then there is a last scene where he is working as a lumberjack.

Haunting of Hill House - 8/10

Very clever, with lots of good scares, the bowler hat man was particularly unnerving.

Can't actually think what I'd say the worst or most disappointing ending to a show was, I'd have to have a think about that one.

Is there a show you have finished?

Plenty, but most are just good ones owing to my exceptional ability to pick good entertainment to watch. ;)

I've watched plenty of shows where the ending or later seasons were of a lower standard than the beginning - West Wing, X-Files, Seinfeld etc. but nothing comes to mind where the ending has made me properly upset or angry in the way that some are describing.

The Sopranos S4

Another absolute blinder. Think I may have missed a few episodes on my previous watch as I didn't remember them. Either way, another 10/10.

I agree it was disappointing and definitely rushed but the characters actions were at least signposted (albeit moments before they acted) dannis madness had some routes, Jons actions were true to his character and sansas behaviour was believable. The only one that annoyed me was Varys, they totally betrayed his character.

Dexter on the other hand was just bizarre, so many potential ways to finish the series and they chose something that literally makes no sense at all and betrays everything we know about the character and all his development over the years.

The weird relationship with his sister and that final scene

strawberry float Dexter and Game of Thrones. The only series I'm more angry about having watched is Sons of Anarchy. strawberry float that in particular!

I didn’t think there was a drop in quality with SoA though, it was pretty consistently good/bad all the way through.

I think with SoA the dropoff happened after the second series. The third was some of the worst big budget TV I've ever seen and it never recovered. Admittedly though, the ending was atrocious.

The Expanse S1

I'm kinda torn on this, I'm enjoying the more traditional sci-fi aspects but finding the political stuff a real drag and pretty hard to follow. Definitely picked up towards the end of the season as some characters paths crossed, and I'll stick with it for now, but I was expecting much more.

6/10

The politics is pretty much the focus of the series going forward, both the books and the show. The latter does have more action, but it's definitely all about the universe, characters and systems at play.

If you didn't like the first series there's nothing in the following two that'll change your mind, I don't think.

(As an aside I think it's the best space show since DS9)

I loved the politics side of the Expanse, I probably prefer it to the more sci-fi aspects. As Taf said, if you don't like the first season then I don't think The Expanse is for you.

The politics is 100% the best thing about it. Due to budget constraints the action is pretty dull. It'll be interesting to see what they do in the upcoming series that I assume had much more money to play with, what with it being produced by Amazon

Yeah Amazon money will help the action and special effects.

I'd love a spin off show that just focused on the politics and tensions between Earth, Mars and the Belt.

It's frustrating because I want to like it, I like the setting and the idea of sci-fi done on a grander scale. I just don't think it's very well explained, half the time that old woman out of 24 was scheming and plotting about stuff and I'd have no clue what was going on. I guess if you've read the books it would be easier but I went in blind.

Yeah, that's a difficult one. For me, I knew ahead of time what was happening so I will have glossed over any shortcomings on that front. I can't remember any particularly large gaps (Mars, Earth and The Belt are in a stand-off state, there's some sort of conspiracy going on whose goal appears to be a war between the three perpetrated by a mysterious 4th group with unheard of technology) but I could be wrong.

It's not a simple show, and that's one of the reasons I love it.

I’ve not read the books and I saw the first season years ago now, but I don’t remember struggling with the politics side of it. Earth has the big population and therefore power, Mars is small but technologically advanced so can hold its own, the Belt are treated like scum by the big two and have an independence/terrorist faction. Earth and Mars are therefore at odds over who gets to control the Belt, whereas the Belt just wants them both to strawberry float off.

I really wish I could have enjoyed the second half of season three more than I did because the sudden shift in focus between the politics and mutiny to the core sci-fi of the Ring left me really wanting the heights of that political intrigue again.

Season four looks like it carries straight on with those themes too and I just want GoT in space. :(

Good shout but I felt the decline of that show was more gradual to the point where my expectations were so low. Although the comically slow speed of the final chase was hilarious!

For me The expanse is the best Sci-Fi show of the last 10 years.

The politics are some of the best bits with my favourite character being Chrisjen Avasarala who I think plays her role excellently.
Yes, the space battles are amazing but it's the well fleshed out wider universe that makes the story special and the fact that it's pretty grounded in reality with technology that mostly seems realistic for the time.
