You thought she was much younger than 17, but had to put a shifty eye in when asking what season she became hot in?

Oh dear Oblomov, you are Gary Glitter.

I wasn’t feeling Adriana so much. Smoking hot body but a face that looked like it had been on the streets for a few years. ;)

T’s Russian girlfriend though. :datass: And the one legged Russian as well. :datass:

Which reminds me:

When Phil was feeling unwell and had a heart attack, the camera lingered on his cleaner/nurse who was the one legged Russian. “You sneaky bastard Tony!” I thought, “You sent her in there to poison that dickhead Phil”.

But nope, it was just an illness and Tony had nothing to do with it. Why show the Russian?

Bobbie and Tony have a drunken fight! Oh no Bobbie!! Tony is clearly pissed off, trouble is brewing…..but nothing happens again.

Vito’s kid is a goth that gooseberry fools in the shower! Phil and Tony both have manly chats with him and he gets dragged off to a camp….and nothing is said again. Why bring him back to the show at all?

The show has so many bizarre bits like that, which make no sense or go nowhere. It’s more disjointed than the latest Star Wars trilogy.

The show also seemed to introduce plotlines that went nowhere. The therapist getting raped for instance, what the strawberry float was that in the show for? She later sees her attacker was “employee of the month” in a shop which was clearly leading to Tony taking care of it for her. But nope, it was never mentioned again.

dr. melfi's rape compels tony to show more of his true colours, in particular the simplistic morality of a mobster and emphasis on loyalty over order, and forces her into a dilemma: someone, however awful, might die as a result of her association with this guy, perhaps even against her wishes, and puts into question the distance she's able to impose on what's supposed to be a professional relationship.

it does kinda happen in a vacuum, but it's thematically coherent and is one of the earliest seeds planted for tony's later discharge from therapy, for exactly the reason his therapist gives then.

im not gonna run down all of your complaints, cause i havent seen the sopranos in a few years, and im not gonna argue about your score because who cares. but i do think you may have watched this show with certain expectations for tight A-to-B storytelling post-breaking bad, when - like mad men - it plays better taken in and digested as literature, like a greek epic, as expressed by its favour for thematic richness over functional continuity.

the sopranos is occasionally boring, frustrating, and obscure (particularly the dream sequences you're talking about): to a point that's by design. put it another, more charitable, subtweety way: it's bigger than a clockwork universe. it's certainly flawed, but it's got a lot to say, and it's bold as hell.

fake edit: after mounting that defense, i feel i should clarify that i don't feel the sopranos is the Greatest Show Ever or whatever, as better tv has come since, but i believe it's definitely a high water mark. i do think that the popular appetite has changed somewhat and it's a little harder to appreciate it in 2019.

I agree I was probably expecting too much of it, it was built up as one of the greatest shows of all time, it was always going to be hard to live up to that.

But I think the show is flawed. I enjoyed it, it’s a good show, but it’s not one of the greats. Maybe if I had watched it in 1999 I’d have a different opinion.

For your spoiler:

Tony never knew Melfi was raped. It happened, the police strawberry floated up and the guy was let go. She found out where he worked. And then nothing. Not even a discussion where she considers telling Tony. It just seemed to be going in one direction, before just being forgotten.

i may have misremembered how it played out, but i feel pretty sure it was communicated between them in therapy, indirectly.

i'm not going to watch the whole show a third time through for a few years at least, so i'll just leave it there. your reading's completely fair. like even though it's clearly the point, strawberry floating anthony jr is an annoying shite, and some stretches of the sopranos are definitely work rather than entertainment.

what can i say!

It’s cool, I’m discussing rather than getting pissy.

AJ is a little twat. His “fiancée” was smoking hot though.

I’m going to let you into a secret. There’s a website called Google that lets you search for images.

Or if you’re a proper degenerate you can use Bing.

I don't have access to Google. It's blocked in my house due to too much searching for porn and wanking, same with Bing.

I agree completely that the storytelling follows a different, much looser template to modern-era drama series. I can understand why that might not be someone's cup of tea — for me it's what makes it so charming.

The characters are mostly thoroughly awful people, but they're so consistent and believable that it enhances the experience rather than detracts from it. I actually thought it was such a shame that Richie Aprile died so suddenly. What a despicable man, but what a brilliant character. I wonder if there was an IRL reason he had to go. Same for Livia, who until the actor's untimely demise was my favourite character.

AJ did seriously well for himself at least a couple of times. The fiancée was a stunner, but the rich girl before her was even more :datass:.

Edit - wrong Aprile in the spoiler...

It's always fun to see if there are various styles to try. Gotta try something new every now and then, ya know?

Sopranos is a top tier, upper echelon, best television series of all-time contender. Probably my favourite show ever. That or The Shield.

The thing I liked most about the Sopranos was the ending. Totally fitting, perfectly executed and in my opinion, very underrated.

Oh what the fork? Halfway through my daily The Good Place binge and out of nowhere suddenly there isn't another episode available. I didn't know it was still going! It really isn't the type of programme to be watched 20 minutes at a time once a week...

I'm still not convinced it's this brilliantly intelligent show... it feels very much a guilty pleasure.

I think the praise for it is perhaps overstated but I wouldn't call it a guilty pleasure. It's worth watching for Ted Danson alone, he's brilliant in it.

Couple of really good articles there on how philosophical conceits power the entire show, and how the complexities of each is taught to the viewer through farce and absurdity.

It absolutely shouldn't be a guilty pleasure, it's one of the best shows in a decade.
