Take a Break sells over 400k??

That’s a lot of dentist waiting rooms.

How do some of these publications continue to exist? They must be operating on the thinnest of margins with shoestring budgets. Quite impressive that they still get stuff out.

I guess the advertising revenue must still be high enough for them to be able to continue. They can’t be getting anywhere near enough from subscriptions and sales.

I know Empire magazine are about to put their “Spoiler Special” podcasts behind a paywall, the future of these specialist magazines may well be paywalled websites and podcasts.

I can't actually recall when the last time I bought any kind of magazine was. Must have been at least 5 years ago now. And in that time I've probably bought about 4 newspapers.

I just have no need for print media in my life at this point.

I still have an Empire subscription but I really should cancel it. I like reading about movies while having a gooseberry fool, but I can just as easily do that on my phone.

What amazes me is that putting Call of Duty Modern Warfare on the cover was the biggest mistake OPM made all year.

If you subscribe, quite a few of these magazines are actually really cheap. £1 for 3 issues for example, or a free gift (that is often worth more than the magazine subscription).

Private Eye is outselling both The Guardian and Sunday Telegraph despite only being released twice a month.

I used to get a copy of the paper on a daily basis at Uni on my commute, but since then it's been rare, I really should sign up for a membership on the app. It provides all of its content pretty much for free - unlike the Times and such which I believe is by a paywall.

Yeah that's a weird one.

I don't buy the physical version anymore, there really isn't any need when most of the stuff I want to read is on their site anyway.

Another magazine has gone under, Boxing Monthly:

Kelsey Media’s Boxing Monthly magazine, which launched in 1989, will end next month.

Britain’s best-selling boxing publication has succumbed to the challenges of the digital era, just weeks after the sport was shut down by the coronavirus.

Editor Graham Houston tweeted: “When a publication dies, for some readers it’s like a little part of their lives is now missing,

From responses received it seems that many feel that way about the death of Boxing Monthly. To all our loyal readers, heartfelt thanks.”

Writer Mark Butcher wrote that a monthly sports magazine “should not exist in the internet era”, but the team had worked “tirelessly” with no full-time editorial staff and low overheads since the death of long-time former editor Glyn Leach in 2014.
