Big Guns Gear Up for Christmas

Having scored a first All Formats No1 this year just 2 weeks ago with ‘Fable II’ on Xbox360, Microsoft are back on top with an even bigger 360 exclusive as ‘Gears Of War 2’ becomes the 3rd largest 360 week 1 title ever (behind GTA IV and Halo 3) and the 8th largest week 1 overall.

EA remain at No2 with steady sales of ‘FIFA 09’ (-1%) with Bethesda Softwork’s UK debut ‘Fallout 3’ dropping from No1 to No3 (-42%). Sony’s PS3 ‘LittleBigPlanet’ garnered very favourable reviews and debuts here at No4 and the big multi-format Christmas contender from THQ ‘WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009’ debuts at No5 with sales over 6 formats – PS3 and 360 virtually neck and neck with 34% and 33% of sales respectively. Nintendo’s new DS puzzler 'Professor Layton and the Curious Village' hopes to emulate the Kawashima’s and makes an honourable start at No6. Also new this week is Activision’s ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’ debuting at No17 and released for 360, PS3, Wii, PS2 as solus or with guitar SKU’s. Sony’s PS3 ‘Motorstorm: Pacific Rift’ debuts at No29 and Ubisoft’s ‘Tom Clancy Endwar’ is the last of the Top 40 new entries at No30 on 360/PS3/DS.

I'm really pleased Layton did so well, despite the fact it should of been out over here strawberry floating ages ago.

NNA was right about Layton. can I just say it's bloody brilliant to see a quality DS title up there like that. Please bring more Nintendo as my wife has run out of top games for hers (she had this on import).

Gears did well. Good to see.

Wow, I thought Fable 2 would be in the top ten for more than a fortnight. :|

Massive drop in sales for Fallout 3 as well.

I wonder if Gears 2 will also see a similar drop in sales in next weeks sales figures.

Suprised at Motorstorm, has it had much marketing? I didn't know it was out until people started talking about it a lot more on here.

Yay for the success of LBP and Professor Layton :D Hopefully this'll mean the return of the 2D platformer's dominance!

Aye, but bar Gears 2, there aren't that many big titles out for the 360 which makes the sales drop for Fable 2 slightly worrying...I'm pretty sure the first Fable didn't drop in the charts/sales as hard as Fable 2 has.

A 12 place drop in a week is pretty shocking stuff.

Fable 2 is still just in the top 10 individual format charts, it sold a hell of a lot of copies in the first week too, I'd imagine it'll be hanging around in the top 40 for a while, I don't think its done badly at all (very well in fact).

Pretty sure Gears 2 will fair better in the coming weeks, but it'll probably slip a bit. World at War could topple it next week, CoD is a big franchise.

Seriously doubt it but it's great to see.

LBP clearly has done good so maybe it is a system seller for PS3 as they'd hoped?

In the individual format charts it's still top ten, and given the number of new releases this week it's hardly surprising to see such a drop. MS could certainly do with continuing to push it throughout the winter months - it'd make a great Christmas game for many - so that it sticks around, but I think it'll sell reasonably steadily over the next few weeks.

Incidentally, it's funny how Fable's drop is getting mentioned while no-one talks about Far Cry 2's plummet down the charts. And, indeed, World Tour's poor performance.
