Learning Sign Language

So I've been wanting to learn sign language for a while but can't seem to find any courses at my local institutions.

I know there is an online service available but I would quite enjoy practicing sign language in person.

I know we have a few deaf members on the forums so I thought it might be worth asking if anyone knew of a way I could track down some local courses or study groups, cheers.

I have been learning sign language from my daughter's favourite children's show. It's oddly quite fun.

The show teaches sign language specifically, or it's just signed so you're learning from it?

The guy talks but he also does sign language at the same time.

A friend of mine was a teacher.

She learnt sign language and now she does teaching with deaf children in special schools for them.

She prettty much doubled her salary just by doing a few night classes in sign language. Good on her.

I can speak a bit of Makaton because I've been going to Sing and Sign classes with my son for two years. It's really good fun, although it's aimed at children who are non-verbal either due to age or disability so I wouldn't say it's the same communication level as BSL, even though it shares a lot of signs.

The sentence structure of BSL seems quite hard to grasp. I watch BSL versions of stuff on CBeebies when it's on and, even though I'm partially BSL-literate due to my Makaton, the signs all seem to come in a funny order. Not sure how important the facial expressions are either, but they don't do them half-arsed so I'm assuming they matter!

Had to improvise a few signs but I can now do a Makaton version of "The Wanky Tottenham Hotspur went to Rome to see the Pope" as well :slol:

zzzap was for deaf kids which is why it was non-verbal and had comic things for the sounds

I think anyone with kids from the last ~15 years has been exposed to Mr Tumble/Justin and therefore we are all now fluent with Makaton! :lol:
