I wish I had access to a guide when I was a kid, it took me a lot of trial and error to beat Eagle Tower

Although not as bad as that riddle in the 2nd dungeon where you need to kill the enemies in a certain order to get a key. I'm sure I was stuck on that for months.

Getting stuck was kind of annoying as a kid but considering the amount of free time I had as a child compared to now it wasn’t so bad to get stuck on a part of a game for a while. Nowadays I’m just happy enjoying and finishing a game then moving onto the next one!

I was put off Ocarina of Time for years as a child when I got stuck. Only came back to it on the Wind Waker bonus disc.

I’ve finished this. It’s pretty good, but compared to other games in the Zelda series it gets a big shrug from me. I don’t see the god-tier experience other people are seeing.

Finally had some time to play this through to completion. My opinion of it isn't great. I can imagine on the gameboy back in the day it was quite an achievement, but honestly it feels such a poor Zelda compared to all the other top down games in the series after the NES.

980 rupees to get the bow, that you only use for one switch in one dungeon is just ridiculous. It felt like pointless padding on a game that didn't need it. The story was probably the weakest of all the games, I didn't feel attached to any of the characters.

I guess the only real praise I can give it is that it was a really faithful remake. But having finally finished it, and having ignored it back when it was first released in 1993, I can tell it won't be a game I ever go back to for another replay.

I can't see why this game in particular got the remake treatment though given all the other titles they could have done!

Curious take, CRD. I recently played through it for the first time and had a blast.

Don't get me wrong, I'm probably very jaded as for me Link to the Past is the ultimate top down Zelda. Going from that to Links Awakening for this kind of remake just feels a very curious choice. It's not a bad game by any means, but in terms of a remake I have to admit I was expecting something a little more special.

I almost see where CRD's coming from, but:

captain red dog wrote:I can imagine on the gameboy back in the day it was quite an achievement, but honestly it feels such a poor Zelda compared to all the other top down games in the series after the NES.

... The story was probably the weakest of all the games, I didn't feel attached to any of the characters.

The issue I have here is that he includes LttP in games that are better than it. LttP's story is... is it even there? I thought it was just a slog of dungeons. Also, one of my main problems with LA was that the dungeons were too obtuse - LttP dials that up to 9.5. The bow didn't really bother me either. EDIT: Didn't see the above post when putting this out -

In general I think I agree: the best things about this game (apart from Marin) were put in in the refresh (the graphical style, the QoL stuff), and I didn't think the core game had aged well at all. It's just a way of putting it that I'm not aligned with.

I think that’s where I am at the moment. So frustrating. This is turning out to be my least favourite Zelda by some margin - the only Zelda that I haven’t enjoyed aside from the nes ones which I never bought. It’s so obtuse. It’s a real shame as I loved A Link Between Worlds.

Really don't get how it's obtuse when there are explicit hints in both the owl statues and the telephone booths if you ever get stuck, and QOL improvements (in the original game) like the chime letting you know which room has a key in it. ALTTP is far, far worse in obtuse design.

Also anyone who doesn't feel attached to Marin is a heartless monster

It’s not that I’m finding the gameplay tricky it’s just that I’ve come up against a few brick walls already, namely making the potion to get rid of the raccoon thing in the forest (of course, the witch does give a hint but it felt a little disconnected to me), an enemy not dropping a key making the 2nd dungeon impossible until I reloaded and then that riddle about killing enemies in a certain order when, as far as I can tell, they’re not mentioned by name in the rest of the game so I don’t know which enemies to attack first to unlock the next section of the dungeon (without having to look up a solution out of game). These aren’t necessarily hard just badly designed, which is not a criticism I’d usually level at this series.

It looks beautiful and is charming in its design, however, as a modern game, it shows its age and, without nostalgia and a prior knowledge of the game, it’s ultimately proven to be a frustrating experience for me, sadly.

Not ashamed to admit I got stuck plenty of times but then again, as I've stated several times, I suck at Zelda games (the only games I do suck at, tbf) so I expect to get stuck.

As an 8 year old I actually accidentally broke the game and glitched into an alternate world which still seemed easier than the actual solution of killing those three enemies in the right order in Bottle Grotto.

You don't need to know the enemy names to figure out the first one to kill is the one that's trapped inside the blocks, and the last one to kill is the one that looks like a skeleton.

(They changed it from the original where it doesn't say "skeletal", but it still says "imprisoned" so you know which to kill first, leaving you with only two combinations to try)

Regardless there are only 9 combinations, it's quick enough to just brute force it if you have to. The game makes it clear there is a key in that room, and I think you get an incorrect sound effect even if you kill them in the wrong order.

Fun fact about Pol's voice: You can insta-kill them by playing the ocarina :D

Really pleased to have started playing this. I have been reading some of the mixed comments in this topic and I see why some rate it much more highly than others. As a child, playing this game was a revelation - I had not experienced anything like it, this big open world that I could explore at my own pace, with characters like no other game I'd known. Playing this new remade version of the game is a delight! It is without doubt, the best version of a game which I hold so highly, but I do admit, if I had never played the original, certain elements would feel lacking. Characters that seemed so detailed back in the day, now feel very limited, but I'm pleased that it remains so faithful to the original game. I'm amazed at how well my memory has held up of this game too... about 15 years after I probably played it last, and I still remember so many details of the game, even a large number of the dungeon puzzles! I'm hoping that I can get all of the seashells without going to a guide. I also remember having one heart piece always allude me, so that will be a goal as I play the remake. Not so sure about attempting to complete it without losing a life to unlock the alternative ending though... Lost that chance on this play through a long time ago.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

I bet it's the one in the castle moat. I was always missing one on the gameboy version (I dug every single screen's tiles with the space searchin for it, inside and out) and I'm pretty sure it was this one.
