Wait, you think that if it's 2D it isn't a main Zelda title?

Legend of Zelda was the first franchise to launch with over a decade of side games until it released its first main game in 1998.

Not including LoZ and LttP is just plainly daft, but... this one does feel a bit spinoffy. Maybe not back in the day (although even then you had the weird parody elements, and the fact it was the first Zelda not set in Hyrule and not fighting against the series Big Bad), but now, as a port of a Game Boy game... I would agree that this feels like a stopgap between 'main' Zeldas. I'd say that the 'main' Zelda games are LoZ, LoZ2, LttP, OoT, MM is debatable and I think I'd lean on the side of not, WW, TP, SS, ALBW, and BotW.

YMMV, of course - and that doesn't mean it's any worse, although it doesn't work so well for me as most of those ones I've mentioned up top. I maintain that given time of release, the best Pokémon game is the side game Pokémon XD.

i believe nintendo counts the "main series" titles as, the original, aol, alttp, la, oot, mm, oa/os, fs, ww, mc, fsa, tp, ph, st, ss, albw, tfh, botw and the upcoming botw2

To quote reliable source wikipedia: "Tezuka sought to make Link's Awakening a spin-off, and gave Tanabe instructions to omit common series elements such as Princess Zelda, the Triforce relic, and the setting Hyrule."

As a huge fan of Link's Awakening I'm comfortable in saying Link's Awakening is not a mainline game. At the very least, there has grown an obvious split between the 3D and 2D Zelda games so a remake of LA now very much falls into the 2D category.

I'd agree with Balla, and I'd probably note the original LA as the first of the 2D games to split from the mainline that became the 3D games.

On the wikipedia timeline only some of the games are bolded, which seems to indicate a "mainline", but it's weird to me because A Link Between Worlds is included!

Well I guess ALTTP would be, forgot about that, but this is basically a handheld game. I now know what Nintendo are up to blurring the line between handheld and home console games. They can effectively release handheld games at full price!

I was on the money! Well I wasn't because I forgot WW, but other than that!

I'm really not sure what makes ALBW distinct from Phantom Hourglass or Spirit Tracks, but there we go

I think at some stage it has to come down to ‘gut feel’. Those games didn’t take place in Hyrule, didn’t have Ganon, and... frankly felt a bit weird. Meanwhile ALBW was a direct sequel to an unarguably mainline Zelda, set in the same world.

Hyrule or not probably works for the (single-player) Zelda to be honest, although that rules out MM.

Spirit Tracks is not even a videogame.

No I will not explain

A Link Between Worlds is included, but not Phantom hourglass. Sorry, but no.

Sorry, but Phantom Hourglass is the same Link and Zelda from Wind Waker looking for a New Hyrule. it is a direct sequel to Wind Waker just as much as A Link Between Worlds is to A Link to the Past.

It's almost like you quoted my post, responded to it, and in doing so ignored everything after the first 'Zelda'. :P Also the one earlier where I said YMMV.

I have no idea what you mean by ignoring evrything after first 'Zelda' to be completely honest with you. I simply qouted a post, and said if you consider A Link Bewtween Worlds a main Zelda, then the same should be applied to Phantom Hourglass ieven if you feel the game is "frankly a bit weird"

YMMW takes place after ALBW but before BOTW right?

Thought YMMV was a sequel to Link's Crossbow Training tbh.

When it comes down to it there's no right or wrong answer, it's all subjective, and 'frankly a bit weird' is as good an answer as any; but it's not my only criterion.
