My Switch screenshot library is like a record of games I have completed as I normally take a screenshot on the credits or end screen, it's self-directed which is nice. While achievements can be fun I do think they can harm the experience and I like that they don't exist on Switch. System achievements homogenise the experience of playing games a little. They add an external pressure to playing games in certain ways, they add this compulsion for me to pay them attention. And as much as they are touted as a layer on top of a game, I think they do restrict game design by being mandated.

Which is all to say, please keep them away from my precious Zelda :P

I generally don't care about them either (only have one plat and it's Ghost of Tsushima lol) but I still think having something on the side can motivate players to see more than they usually wouldn't have. If BotW had an achievement system I prob would have gone out of my way to 100% if I'm being honest. Not sure I've ever felt pressured by them which is an interesting perspective. But you can always turn them off if they really do feel in the way.

I’m currently on the desert section, trying to locate the 3 dials to get access to the mine? 10 hours on the clock so far

Everything in the Lanayru area is 10/10 for me. Currently about to take on the Sandship which is easily one of the coolest dungeon ideas in the series. I love when they take these less conventional locations and make them into a full-on dungeon to take on. Another perfect example is the Mansion from TP. Wish we had more of these.

Those are my favourite dungeons from those games

Jokes aside, something I've always wanted in a Zelda game is a relationship mechanic similar to something like Animal Crossing. The games have such a colourful cast I wish we could interact with more.

SS is just banger after banger with it's dungeons right from the get go, holy heck. I'd say Skyview is prob the weakest but even then it's still pretty solid for an opening dungeon. Currently in Fire Sanctuary and remembering how cool this place was thematically too.

Also I need to get this off my chest now that I've replayed a good chunk of this game and feel comfortable enough in my stance on it and say the "backtracking" criticisms are way too exaggerated. Prob gonna ruffle some feathers saying that but not once have I felt discouraged or annoyed that was going back to certain areas. The places you do revisit, you can skip past most of it because of your updated gear allowing to take different paths or approaches. I think backtracking is a natural aspect to most adventure games. SS is hardly a big offender of it as much as folks like to make it out to be.

12 and a half hours on the clock and I just beat the first imprisoned fight, still enjoying it but some of the button controls can still be fiddly (like swapping items on theZR button)

Still enjoying my time with it tho

From what I remember (From my one and only playthrough on Wii back in the day), it has you visit each region three times.

2 of those times, they play like dungeons in themselves, you unlock new areas within those. And they are really enjoyable. I cannot understand why people complain about this.

The other time, yeah, I can understand the criticism and I agree with it. The game has you doing fillerish things (collecting tadpoles in the forest area, a stealth section where you lose all your equipment in the volcano region).

It was a game filled with filler back then. This is coming from someone who actually liked the game back when it came out.

I don't know how the rerelease fairs in respect of that. I'm definitely going to get it when I'm done with ME Legendary Edition, it will be interesting to see how it compares with my memory of it.

If you unlock the shortcut at the start, the Eldin revisit is an afterthought. Also you've got better equipment and that lets you stream through it like nothing. Personally did not mind it at all. I prob just have a weird perspective but it makes me more attached to these areas because we're going back to them. The reason why Majoras Mask is a powerful as it is, is because of the time loop elements that really get you intimate with that world. It leaves an impression. I feel like that kinda applies to SS in some ways but maybe to not the same effect which bugs a lot of folks.

Coming up on 14 hours and I have just fixed the windmill and followed the beam of light to the tower. Roughly how far through the game am I at this point?

Back on this after a short break, up to the Lanayru Mine / Desert area now. The timeshift stones seems like a fun mechanic so far - really hoping they build on it well as it feels like there's a lot of potential for some fun puzzles there!
