The remaster features two control schemes, one of which aims to replicate the functions of the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuck through improved motion controls on the Joy-Con, while the other aims replicate a traditional control scheme by using the right analog stick to control the previously motion controlled sword. This secondary control method will allow the game to be played in Handheld Mode, on a Pro Controller, and on the Nintendo Switch Lite.

In addition to higher-resolution graphics, the game will now play at 60 frames per second.[1] Support for Amiibo figures will also be available in the game, although it is not known what the effects of that integration will be

Personally never played this Zelda at all, happy to finally try it out using standard controls (although, if the sword is assigned to the right stick, how would you handle camera control?)

Hopefully they have QoL fixes to sort out a lot of problems people seem to have with the game. Will you be buying this GR?

This was underwhelming and disappointing a decade ago, so I doubt Nintendo's "upgrades" will offset that, particularly in a world where Breath of the Wild exists.

Loved it the first time so I'll definitely be getting it again. Some of the best dungeons in the entire series.

It's a wii game, it never had camera control!

It's no different to Ocarina of Time, you just make liberal use of z-targeting to centre the camera behind you. I never had a problem with the camera tbh!

QOL changes are the big one for me, with just a few tweaks they could really make this the definitive version (even if I am a little hesitant about something being lost in the art style in the resolution upgrade). One of the QOL changes I'm hoping for is that Fi (aka the game's Navi) no longer forcibly interrupts all the time with some, to be honest, pretty bad dialogue. If her help is made optional and unobtrusive it would make things flow so much better. The other QOL change I really want is with the description text on picking up an item for the first time. In the original this resets on rebooting the game, so every play session it's as if every item is being picked up for the first time. I'm pretty optimistic for both, they are well known complaints and BOTW did things like item descriptions in the better way so Nintendo do know about it.

I'd say Skyward Sword is the diametrically opposite Zelda to Breath of the Wild - linear, story driven and dungeon focused, where BOTW is open world exploration. I think they complement each other quite well!

I hate Nintendo’s policy of charging money for old and largely unchanged rope, I hate that people buy into it (self included at times) and therefore encourage them to do it more, and while I don’t hate Skyward Sword (it’s an 8/10 game) it’s probably my least favourite 3D Zelda. I won’t be picking it up.

I also think the best thing about it is the motion controls, and anybody planning to play it with standard controls who isn’t disabled or only owns a Lite is cutting off their nose to spite their face.

This is a great Zelda. Some brilliant dungeons, great characters that make for an enjoyable story and the motion controls really made it a unique experience for me. And one of the best home towns in Skyloft. It definitely wasn't perfect with reptition and padding probably the biggest issue but I enjoyed it a lot.

Having said that, there doesn't seem much to get excited about for this port so I won't be buying it.

I loved this game despite its flaws. The time stone mechanic was incredible, the bit where you are on the ship sailing around the sea that isn't actually there anymore

It just has way too much filler.

This is a great game that I can’t wait to replay.

I think they’ve kind of gone halfway on a non motion control setup but it’s not like they could do much to keep the swordplay similar to motion controls unless they auto mapped the direction according to the enemies sword positioning but that'd make it really easy. One thing I’d like them to take out (but they won’t for obvious reasons) is one of the Imprisoned fights, they really spoilt the flow of the game for me.

I skipped the Wii and Wii U so I'll be picking this up. Apologies for encouraging the old rope philosophy.

Yeah, this is everyone's policy nowadays though. Only Nintendo make more noise about it, when everyone is hoping for them to announce something new. That's the difference.

See: HD collection / HD remaster / HD xyz / "definitive edition" over the past 10+ years at least.

They did do a pretty good job on Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD. It was Mario that was weak. Does anyone know if the same studio is handling this? I think Wind Waker was done in house but TP was an external studio with Nintedo production, pretty much nothing was left untouched.

Both remakes of the N64 games were fantastic as well. Those really were transformed games in many ways.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

There wouldn't be an issue with their constant re-releases if a) they had better new content coming out and b) their pricing was more consumer friendly.

I do have sympathy with a) as obviously covid has had an impact on development.

It'll be interesting to see if we have a big first party Nintendo title this Christmas. I fully expect Pokémon to be there at least.

This is quite possibly fair. I remember feeling similar contempt at Sony when they pulled the same trick with Uncharted at the start of the PS4 generation - difference being, back then it felt like padding out what is always an empty period, the launch period. Nintendo should be beyond that now.

I do agree that WWHD and OoT3D were both great remakes that breathed new life into the games. It just doesn’t look like SSHD is going to be the same, although I could be wrong.

Tom also makes a fair point about empty release schedules and higher expectations associated with Nintendo at the moment. I don’t buy his COVID point though, because it feels like the entirety of 2020 was waiting for Nintendo to shake off their COVID slump. 2021 should be better and this (and the rumoured rerehashes of WWHD and TPHD) is not a good starting point.

Problem is, Pokemon this year will be another remake if rumours are to be believed. We could get a 2D Metroid this year at least.

Wasn’t the Mario collection just handled by their emulation team? The ones that work on the VC stuff, would explain why it was so poor and bare bones. No idea who is handling SS HD though, maybe it’s a portion of the Zelda team.

Samus Returns had an E3 announcement and then a September release. Wouldnt be surprised to see similar this year.

In Pokémon’s defence, they’ve been on a similar pattern of, new generation game, remake and possibly a 3rd version in the same generation, new generation for a good while now. So Diamond/Pearl remakes make sense really going on their previous remakes completed.

It’d be nice to think it’s Grezzo, they’ve done well (for the most part) with porting older Zelda games to modern consoles in the past.

Never played it so I'll definitely be giving it a shot, but what little they revealed in the Direct looked very uninspiring in all honesty.
