I love doing this, I find myself just putting some of the soundtrack on when I take the dog for a walk, or when I’m just sat at home browsing the web, in general the series soundtrack is just really nice to listen to.

I really like all of the 3 (well 4 if you count creating a champion) they’ve done over the years.

From what I remember Monolith did help with quite a bit with BoTW, I wonder if know jobs have started to appear on their website we might get a slight tease at E3? Even if its just like when we first saw BoTW with Link on a horse in the open field.

Funnily enough I also flicked through the entire Art & Artefacts book today. I have some drawing commissions coming up.

It's all Ad's fault. Now all my drawings will be anime style.

(Honestly the artwork for some of the first game is kind of bad (namely monsters and items), maybe those were Miyamoto's original drawings? Zelda II gets noticeably better - I think they actually hired artists at that point. I know Miyamoto himself is a multi-disciplinary but it totally looked like stuff I did when I was 12 :simper:)

I'd pick out the bad ones but it would be cruel - there are a few that are odd drawings but yeah it's obvious how much better it gets and the resources/hires they made over the years

The one that just upsets me is the compass, it isn't even round lol

Then again what's the point of producing realistic or stylish drawings if you're limited to a matrix of about 8 pixels.

Older games (i.e. up until the mid 80s) were often made by just one, or maybe a couple, of people and they developed the whole thing including the idea, coding, graphics and sound. Folk had wide skill sets and, for better or worse, the end result was clear for all to see :-). Since then, of course, development teams have grown and the bigger titles have a ton of stuff just focussed upon specific aspects of the game.

There's no doubting that, generally, games often have excellent presentation nowdays... but there's still something to be said for the odd game that arrives having been born from the mind and hands of just one or two people :-).

Skyward Sword has the best dungeons of any 3D Zelda game. Just a shame about the linearity and the overworked. They could have done so much with the sky setting, as it really reminded me of Wind Waker in the sense of freedom it gave you, but it had about three islands.

Had they actually balanced the sky and the land parts, then the linearity of the latter wouldn't have been a problem. Instead, you basically had only the pumpkin place and the sword cutter to distract you. Skyloft was excellent - one of the best Zelda towns going - but there was nothing else.

Twilight Princess raises its eyebrow in your general direction.

I agree with the rest, although you didn’t mention how great the motion controls were. Loved them.

Both OOT and TP have far better dungeons.

They've all got nothing on BOTW's dungeons though

Both have excellent dungeons, especially the Sandship and Snowpeak Ruins, and items within dungeons such as the Beetle and the Spinner. The main difference I think is that TP's are isolated traditional dungeons, whereas SS's blend into the areas they are in as the overworld locations themselves are basically extensions of the dungeons.

I think my big problem with the SS dungeons was that the last two copied earlier themes. True, OoT did this to some extent, but there was enough differentiation for all but the two fire ones (one of the tree ones had a ghostly theme, one of the water ones was a monster’s tummy), and of course more of them outright. From a gameplay point of view the SS fire and sand/time dungeons differed; from a thematic point of view they felt too similar.

The Ancient Cistern, the only thematically different one of SS’ last three dungeons and the only one to introduce a new enemy type, was brilliant.

Skyward Sword had some really good gooseberry fool in it. Cut out the filler nonsense and it would have been a truly great game.
