He didnt grow up in London. You're talking about 80s Northern Ireland. Ethnic diversity would have been shades of white. I'm from the NW of England and I grew up as the token non-white in my whole school. Every single person I grew up with, including my current friends from that era, will have said or done something racist to me from back in the 90s. I'm not going to hold that against any of them.

The real issue here people is he decided to go out and murder someone. The race should be secondary and the fact it isnt is a sad reflection on society.

I knew when I typed that out that it didn't look right. I also tried "gonk" but that looked like a racial epithet so stuck with conch. Some words just evade me, cosh being one of them

It brought to mind a bizarre mash up between Taken and The Lord of the Flies

He decided to go out and murder a black man. Race was the primary thing on his mind.

He hasn’t actually apologised, since admitting he was wrong merely implies regret. Everything he has said has been an explanation of his state of mind in an obvious attempt to distance himself from his decades-old rashness.

John Barnes is correct that people will now be more afraid to admit to harbouring racist views, but nobody was admitting to that anyway. This instance only came about because, being of average PC-ness, Liam genuinely didn’t see the racial implications until it was too late.

I’m grateful to Liam for exemplifying how the actions of one black person are viewed as being somehow representative of all black people. Were he ever caught, the rapist would have almost certainly received a harsher prison sentence than a white rapist.

I miss the days when people were afraid to speak their racist views.

PC might go mad, but at least we didn’t have to hear the bullshit.
