Highland Council slammed for sending out royal ‘mourning kits’

Image

The Highland Council has been slammed for sending out “mourning kits” in anticipation of the death of members of the Royal Family.

The move was branded “bizarre” by one business owner in Foyers who got the package – particularly as it included materials for Prince Charles who is not yet 70.

The kits include a black tablecloth, a vase, a book of condolence and even a guide to mourning.

According to a guide to sent out by the Council certain establishments were “chosen” as a designated place of mourning.

This included the small post office and shop in Foyers on Loch Ness to the south west of Inverness.

The directions state that the book of condolence should be made available on the “first working day” after the announcement of the death.

The book should be placed in an “easily accessible place, but discreet enough to enable those signing the books a moment of privacy and quiet reflection whilst doing so.

The mourning kits apply to “the Sovereign, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Rothesay or the Duchess of Cornwall.”

Jan Hargreaves who runs the Foyer’s post office and shop said that she was left quite “puzzled” by the arrival of the package.

She said: “I was just surprised. My husband had spoken to someone who called from the Highland Council and then it had slipped his mind.

“We were nonplussed by it – just puzzled by it really after all there is being ready and there is this. Plus it is a tiny shop and there is no space.

And it costs money, it is a very decent bit of tablecloth and the vase for the flowers is also quite nice – it all costs.”

She added: It is all just a bit bizarre really, we don’t want to be disrespectful but it caused us to smile. We have it clearly marked in the storeroom.”

Penny Junor, a Royal biographer and journalist, said the council should “apologise” because it is “in very bad taste – Charles is not yet even 70 years old.”

She said: “The council should apologise to the Queen and move whoever made the decision to another line of work.”

A Highland Council spokeswoman said the move may have been prompted by the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA).

She said: “I understand that COSLA has issued guidance to all local authorities on the death of a senior national figure.”

lmao that's hilarious. Why would someone need to mourn their deaths if they're not their family.

I definitely can understand mourning people you don't know. I got really sad when the guy from Frightened Rabbit killed himself. I don't really understand sending out kits to prepare for it though.

Man jailed for throwing own semen at Edinburgh woman in Asda car park

Image

A man who splashed a vial of his semen over a woman at a secluded supermarket car park has been jailed. Samuel Reid was jailed for eight months and placed on the sex offenders register for a minimum of ten years after he sprayed the tube of fluid over the woman’s back as she leaned into her car boot while packing her shopping away in Edinburgh

Reid had targeted the woman in October 2016 at an isolated area of the Asda car park at Milton Link in the Capital. During his trial, the 56-year-old said he had the vial of semen in his car as he was having trouble with producing his usual quantities when he ejaculated and wanted a sample to take to the doctor. He claimed he must have leant on the vial while he was rummaging in the back of his vehicle and the liquid shot out over the woman. But sentencing, Sheriff Peter McCormack told the offender that his version of events was “in the ‘top two’ in my legal career of the most lamentably unbelievable defence evidence I have ever heard”. Reid initially pulled up alongside the woman in his vehicle as she bent over her car, then pretended to rummage in his own boot before throwing the test tube of his semen over her jumper. Reid was confronted by the confused victim who asked him if he had spilled anything on her. But the self-employed joiner told the woman he had “nothing squirty or squeezy in my car” before driving off. The victim, who cannot be identified due to legal reasons, did not know what substance had been splattered over her back and called police to report the matter. Join our Facebook group Our Edinburgh to share images and news from and around the Capital A subsequent DNA report revealed the liquid was semen and Reid was later identified and tracked down by police following the incident at around 9pm on October 28, 2016. Reid was initially charged with ejaculating over the woman during the incident but he was found guilty of a lesser charge of projecting semen onto her body following a summary trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month. Sheriff Peter McCormack described the attack as “disgusting, perverted and sinister” and said he believed there had been “a lot of planning involved” in the sex attack. Sheriff McCormack added: “I am more than satisfied in this case there is no other appropriate disposal other than imprisonment.” “It concerns me you have not admitted what you did and you have been unable to offer any explanation as to what you did. “What you did was to make a quantity of your semen and wait at the Asda car park and target a lone female who was packing shopping into her car. “By means unknown you threw the quantity of semen over this woman onto her jumper. I am satisfied you did not directly masturbate on to her, given the evidence.” The court was told Reid has a previous conviction for shameless indecency and Sheriff McCormack told the offender that Scottish Ministers will also be informed of his latest conviction.

At least it was his own, it'd be far worse if he was collecting other people's semen to throw at people in car parks.

Traffic easing in Stroud after broken down lorry cleared

Traffic in Stroud is starting to clear after a broken down lorry in the centre of the town brought traffic to a standstill for over an hour.

Additionally the lorry, which was stranded outside Rowcroft Retreat near Merrywalks, held up a second lorry which was also trying to access the area.

All major roads around the town centre arre now clear and travel times have returned to normal.

Thank god for that, I was up all night worrying about it.

Trowbridge car park smells like the rest of Trowbridge and people are outraged!

http://www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/news/16 ... e-a-sewer/

Trowbridge multi storey car park smells like a 'sewer'

CONDITIONS at the multi-storey car park in Trowbridge have been likened to a sewer by town councillors.

Wiltshire Council have come under fire for not keeping the Castle Place multi-storey car park, which it owns, in good condition. Councillors say the ground floor has been hit by flooding problems, which leads to a foul smell, graffiti is scrawled on many of the walls and there has been vandalism.

Cllr Graham Payne said that in 2008 the old West Wiltshire District Council, which merged into Wiltshire Council in 2009, spent £500,000 on the multi-storey and very little, if anything, has been spent on it since.

“This is a very important car park as it is free but at times it smells like a sewer,” he said.

“Wiltshire Council don’t spend any money on it. This summer there have been flooding problems and nothing is being done about it. There is a lot of rubbish chucked down there too.”

Cllr Deborah Halik said volunteers run a soup kitchen on the basement floor of the car park and the flooding there makes it less than ideal.

“The state of this place is ridiculous,” she said. “They have the daily soup run here and being in these wet and smelly conditions is not good at all.”

The councillors also said the fire doors were propped upon when they should not be.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are in the process of resolving the issues. We have been on-site repairing barriers and cleaning drains. We are waiting for the excess water to dry before we are able to fully assess the damage. Each stairwell is also due to be jet washed down and the graffiti cleaned, but we ask that people respect their local area as it costs valuable public money to deal with these types of avoidable issues which is best spent on other, more vital, services.”

In the early hours of Tuesday morning a taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint by one of his passengers, in Wesley Road, Southend.

The victim had picked up two men from Victoria Avenue and had intended to drive them to Lovelace Gardens before the pair asked for the victim to pull up on Wesley Road.

The suspects, both described as white, one with dark hair and the other with light hair, got away with some loose change, running off in the direction of Stanley Road.

This follows an earlier incident where a young man was robbed of his phone and cash at knifepoint on Sunday night, outside Tasty Chicken, in London Road.

The suspect has been described as in his 30s, white, bald and wore a black jacket and dark sporty trousers.

The attacks are the latest in a line of incidents that some fear are becoming more frequent since Operation Southend came to an end last month.

The two-week operation saw an increased police presence with a surge of police officers brought to the streets of Southend, clocking up an additional 694 man hours in the scheme.

During the operation, a decline in crime was noticeable. However, since the end of the operation, there are concerns violent crime could be increasing.

Labour’s councillor for public protection Matt Dent has called on the Conservative administration to act.

He said: “When I speak to residents, the common theme is that nobody feels safe in Southend any more. In the last few weeks we have seen offence after offence of violent crime, including two in the last two days in the ward I represent, Kursaal.

“This cannot go on, and people cannot be expected to live like this.

“Though the police are undoubtedly working very hard, they simply do not have the resources to do what is required after eight years of cuts, which have seen Essex lose more than 700 police officers.

“It is clear the Conservatives nationally and locally have no clue how to address this.

“The Conservatives rejected a Labour proposal for a community safety team, only to U-turn and try to claim the idea for their own four months later. Had they agreed when Labour councillors first proposed it, that team would already be in place.”

Tory councillor for public protection, Mark Flewitt, said police numbers are set to rise but there will not be a “magic solution”.

He said: “We are working really hard with police, really hard. Operation Southend provided more police hours but that won’t guarantee less crime.

“It is absolutely ongoing and there is no magic solution. More police would, of course, be helpful. The community team is getting, I believe, another six people and the police, another 12 officers. It is a neverending program and sadly we’ll see issues on the way.”

Badger cull protest held at Thornbury farm

Image

Protesters at Park Mill Farm, Oldbury Lane

Organised by the Stop the Cull campaign group, the protest took place at Park Mill Farm, Oldbury Lane.

The farm is home to Derek Garrett, a badger cull director for Avon.

A post on the Stop the Cull Facebook page said: “A few of us turned up and held up posters and placards in front of his farm so people in his community know who their local badger killer is.

“We don’t expect to have any more bother from Mr Garrett in the future, but if we do hear any stories of bad behaviour from him or any other farmer, we will pay them a visit.”

Police were also in attendance the protest. A spokesman said: “Police became aware of a protest in the Thornbury area and had officers in attendance.

“It is our duty to help facilitate a person’s right to protest, but officers have the power to search individuals or a vehicle where we believe criminality could take place or is planned.

“The public expect us to allow people to voice their opinions, but these actions must remain lawful.”

Stop the Cull recently came under criticism for publishing the addresses and phone numbers of farmers leading the cull.

Jay Tiernan, spokesman for the group, said: “It is essential to name farmers as people who want to protect badgers need to know where cull zones are likely to be near them. The directors almost always live inside their culling area.”

This year the cull has been expanded across ten new areas and now covers most of the country.

“The drought is a real concern, badger populations haven’t been accurately recorded and there is a real concern that whilst trying to hit the minimum targets, local badger populations could be wiped out. This is illegal under the Bern Convention.

“Our group will fight it in the same way we always fight it, help local people to connect with experienced activists to pass on knowledge: knowing how to find badgers, the easiest ways to stop shooters and signs that a sett is about to be targeted,” Jay added.

Mr Garrett has been approached for comment.

'Soviet supermarket' - Woman blasts 'woefully understocked' Tesco in Gloucester

Image

Nikki Winters has compiled a dossier of photographic evidence

'Couldn't even get some croissants for a Mother's Day breakfast' - Gloucestershire supermarkets STILL struggling after Beast from the East

A woman has compared a Gloucester Tesco store to a "Soviet supermarket".

Nikki Winters thinks the Tesco Extra in Bristol Road, Quedgeley, has been "woefully understocked" for a year. She has compiled a dossier of photographs of the branch's shelves over the last two weeks to support her point.

"The makeup has been locked away for a week for no reason," Ms Winters blasted. "The store reminds me of a Soviet supermarket. It is absolutely shocking. I have complained but I am still waiting for a response."

A spokesman for Tesco apologised for the lack of makeup on offer. He said: “We work hard to ensure good availability of items for our customers, but unfortunately a cancelled delivery on Friday to our Quedgeley Extra store meant some shelves were unable to be fully refilled until the following day.

"Our makeup section is now open as normal, and we would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the cancelled delivery.”
