Dursley man's frustration at cost of new recycling bag

Wayne Howells, of Roseberry Park, took the drive to recycle to heart, regularly filling his Stroud District Council green bag for collection.

But when his bag became too threadbare to use, he was shocked to discover that he would be charged for a new one.

"The council bangs on about recycling, but when I requested a new recycling bag, I was told there would be a £10 delivery charge," he said.

"I think the charge will discourage people from recycling

“It will really put people off. Even if people want to recycle, for some people £10 is a lot of money.

"These bags don't last forever, my one's falling apart now.

"Surely the recycling collectors, or the bin men could deliver it."

A Stroud District Council spokesman said: “Stroud District Council recycling rates are very high, thanks to the way residents have engaged with our collection regime.

“Costs have increased and the council cannot afford to replace bins and bags free-of-charge, so there is a £10 fee for administration and delivery – not for the bag or bin itself.

“Food waste bins, and beige waste bags for eligible households, remain free-of-charge.

“Also, the first owners of a newly-built home will not be charged.

“Due to the small size of collection vehicle cabs, the collection crews are unable to carry replacement containers with them, so a separate crew is sent out for the purpose of delivering them.”

The bike-sharing operator Mobike is pulling out of Manchester this week because of “unsustainable” losses from theft and vandalism – the first time the Chinese firm has abandoned a city because of antisocial behaviour.

“Tens of thousands” of customers in the city should have their deposits and credit refunded in the next few days, the company said on Wednesday. It has already started removing the silver and orange bicycles and will transfer them to London, Oxford, Cambridge and Newcastle, where it will continue to operate.

Bizarrely, a new bench outside the Co-op in Hangleton faces the shop instead of the road.

Kelly Howells, who lives in Hangleton, said: “I’m not sure what the council was thinking with this bench. It’s rather odd. They had one job.”

A spokesman for the Brighton and Hove City Council said: “We’re trying to find out if there was a reason for the bench to be facing the shop.

“Once we’ve spoken to the people who fitted the bench, if necessary we will change the positioning.”

A man who works at the Co-op said: “The council removed the old one, which was facing the right way, because it had been damaged and was a health and safety issue.

“They put a new one in facing the wrong way, a few customers have said it’s very interesting.”

Spying On My Family: Chelmsford family horrified after cameras find sons viewing 'soft porn' in new TV show

A Chelmsford police officer who opened his doors to TV cameras to spy on his family was horrified after discovering his two sons watching “soft porn”.

Rob Kirk, his wife Donna, both 37, and their four children- Chloe, now 18, Ryan, 14, George, 11 and Poppy, nine, from Sixth Avenue, took part in an intrusive social experiment for the upcoming Channel 4 show ‘Spying On My Family.’

The program followed every move of the Kirk family for a whole week, whose phones and internet usage were also monitored.

Arrest over indecency in Southmead woodland

A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of outraging public decency offences, following a number of incidents in the Southmead area of Bristol.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "The incidents happened in Badock's Wood in late July and August.

"The man is in custody for questioning."
