With national and international news being so depressing, I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can look at local news for local people.

Any story counts, just make sure it is only of local interest and not too horrifically depressing.

This story caught my eye on Points West (the nations greatest local news TV programme) last night. Utter muppets.

TWO drunken teenagers wrote off a £75,000 bus when they crashed it after a dangerous nine mile joyride through the Cotswolds, a court heard.

Harry Atley, 19, and Thomas Bloomfield, 18, could be heard on the single decker's CCTV footage shrieking and swearing in hysterical excitement as they took turns to drive it from Tetbury, Glos, to Malmesbury, Wilts.

After 'fourteen minutes of madness' they lost control of the vehicle, owned by Pulham and Sons Coaches Ltd of Bourton on the Water, Glos, and crashed it. They were both thrown into the windscreen, which smashed.

For the first few minutes the defendants could be heard trying to work out how to start the bus, then when they got the engine going they could be heard laughing and jeering

One of them shouted 'We just hi-jacked a bus' as it set off.

Later one shrieked delightedly "We've just stole a bus - we've f***ing stolen a bus!"

Then the crash and a steaming noise could be heard as the video screen was filled with an image of the shattered front window.

A car in Plumstead is causing hilarity among residents as it appears to have a conservatory on top.

Image

People have been began speculating whether it's the car of a very tall person or perhaps the owner wants to capture the sunlight on nice days.

Shoppers' disgust as pigeon dirt cakes City Centre street

ANGRY shoppers have hit out at pigeon poo blighting a City Centre shopping street.

It is thought a combination of nearby building works and hot weather has caused Sauchiehall Street to clog with bird dirt.

Glasgow City Council said the area - from Renfield Street to West Nile Street - is cleaned regularly.

But our pictures show how bad the issue really is as droppings cake the street.

And passers-by said recent rain turned the area into an slip hazard as the dirt turned into slime.

James Mullen said: "I work nearby and I've never seen it as bad as this.

"This stretch of the street is caked in pigeon dirt. It's revolting.

"There seems to be a lot more pigeons recently as well, probably because the demolition works mean they don't have as many places to roost."

The neighbouring section of Sauchiehall Street is closed for works following March's Victoria Nightclub fire and the subsequent need for demolition of the block of buildings.

Kirsty McColm said: "I only come up to this bit to go to Poundland but it's disgusting. I don't walk across it, I go round it, because even though it's dry I don't want it on my shoes.

"When it rained the other day it was pure slime. There's no way it's been recently cleaned."

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said a power washer is used regularly and the main city centre streets were all cleaned in the week before the pictures were taken, including Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street.

He also said the area would be checked again.

The spokesman said: "We have a city centre power washer that is regularly used to clean the streets, particularly where there are build ups of food waste or bird droppings.

"This cleaning often takes place overnight or early in the morning.

"We will check on the area that’s been highlighted in the next 48 hours and take whatever action is necessary."

HUNGRY VANDALS ATTACK IN YATE

A resident in Yate has appealed to the public for help in finding a pair of pesky vandals

Richard McDonough posted CCTV footage of the calculated attack.

On Facebook he said: "Sadly awoke this morning to find my bird feeders had been vandalised last night, fortunately CCTV caught the two that carried out the act. Description: grey hoodies with black and white masks.

"They emptied every single feeder, fat balls and all," he continued.

Watch the video to see the attack which took place over the weekend.

Psychic Sally adds another date for Chipping Sodbury

Image

POPULAR star Psychic Sally is coming to Chipping Sodbury for another date, organisers South West Live have revealed.

The decision was made after tickets to the existing event on Saturday, January 5 sold out within seven days.

Another show on Friday, January 4 is now on sale. The evening will again be at the same venue, Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, with tickets costing as little as £25.95 for guests wishing to attend.

The event selling out within seven days also represents South West Live's fastest-selling event ever.

James Murden of the event organising company revealed his 'delight' that Sally's show was so well received.

"Due to popular demand, a second date has been added on Friday 4th January," he said.

“We knew that Sally would draw a crowd but we didn’t imagine she’d sell out quite so quickly, I’m thrilled we’ve managed to secure a second date so that fans don’t miss out”.

Sally is doing the show as part of her 10-year anniversary tour 'Close Encounters', and has promised that it "will be her biggest yet."

Shouldn't she have foreseen the popularity and booked an extra day?

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Great idea for a thread, although it does make me realise that I must be out of step with others - I never watch, listen to, or read any local news!

Gloucestershire's most lawless car park? We spent 20 minutes there and saw society on brink of collapse

Gloucestershire Live

Slightly OTT headline for an article that basically boils down to: the car park at the station gets a bit busy when the London train comes in.

We spent 20 stressful minutes parked in the pick-up section and witnessed confrontation, extremely risky driving and a weird phenomenon that meant almost every car's indicator lights were used.

Cheltenham Spa is basically the wild west. :dread:

Indeed, I've certainly seem plenty of bad and ugly at Cheltenham Spa - not so much of the good though!

Also; "a weird phenomenon that meant almost every car's indicator lights were used"? Proper spooky stuff, call in the X-Files!

Wotton pubs go head to head in lip sync video battle

Image

WHEN a pub landlord challenged staff at a neighbouring hostelry to a lip sync battle, they simply couldn't resist.

Andrew Starling of the Falcon Steakhouse in Wotton threw down the gauntlet to the Star Inn as a way of raising funds for new defibrillators for the town.

He gave a deadline of three weeks for both pubs to film and put online a video of staff strutting their stuff and miming the words to a popular song.

And both establishments met the July 30 upload deadline, with the Star Inn opting for a Britney Spears' track, and the Falcon choosing a musical number, The Other Side, from The Greatest Showman.

Mr Starling, who stars in the Falcon's riveting video, along with sous chef Harry Luckett, was inspired by videos of American police officers performing pop songs, which have gone viral across the US.

He said: "I saw some videos online from the US, of different police departments calling each other out for lip sync battles and thought it looked like good fun.

"So we called out the Star Inn in a lip sync battle and gave them three weeks to respond.

"We are using these videos to help raise awareness of our town's defibrillator appeal, which has being organised by the Wotton Lions.

"There's charity collection buckets in the pubs, and people can also donate via the Wotton Lions' Facebook page.

"The video with the most likes will win, and the losing team will have to wear their pyjamas to work on Saturday, September 1.

"The winners get bragging rights over their neighbouring pub.

"It took about an hour and half to choreograph and film our video, which we did all on one night after work.

"Both videos had over 30,000 combined views before they'd even been up for a day."

Robin and Annie Heap of the Star Inn both impress as Britney Spears in a hilarious rendition of her hit song, Baby One More Time, which also features other members of staff and punters.

Faye Young, who works at the pub and also has an A-Level in media studies, put the film together.

"I was given a coursework project very similar to this so it all came in very handy and was a lot of fun to do," she said.
