I began to lose interest in it after around 15 hours into the game as progress is so painfully slow thanks to the miniscule amount of resources each run yields.

They're doing a free game every day at the moment.

I've added this to my account like all the other free stuff they give out, but there's close to zero chance I'll ever bother to play it

I'm sick of redeeming gooseberry fool I won't play, and I certainly won't download games I'll never touch. This is the first freebie I've thought was worth downloading in *ages*.

Yeah. I can why you would feel that way. I'm 35 minutes in and, in three visits to the camp, have only managed to gather enough resources to build the kitchen. But the gameplay loop of managing loot and tile placement is fresh enough at the moment that I'm happy enough to see where it goes. I'll be amazed if I make it to 15 hours though!

I'm guessing the game allows for paths to be added to the loop as gameplay progresses and more features unlock...

I have just been looking at this... it caught my attention with Eurogamer awarding it a [Recommended] rating and Switch Up awarding it 90%.

The game certainly appears to offer a twist to rogue-like gameplay and it seems pretty fun. It's £13 on Switch and I'm gonna go check out a bit more about it.

Edit: Yeah, this seems to be a Switch game that has flown well under the radar. On Metacritic it has an 84 rating after fifteen reviews.

It would be much simpler if they just credit the free games automatically.

You'd get al the gooseberry fool you don't want then though.

I've actually played for 26 hours and still haven't beaten the boss for the first time yet, it just wipes me out within seconds every time.

I gave this a go this week, and it's sucked me right in. It's slow for progress, sure, but it's introducing stuff at a pace that I find so much more comfortable than many other deck builders. Your first few expeditions just have you taking all your cards with you, and it's not until you have a few upgrades built that you start having to manage your deck, and thankfully there aren't any card resources to manage, or at least not yet anyway.

While gathering resources for upgrades is slow, it finds that right sweet spot where the temptation to do another loop and grab just a bit more, risking 60% of what you've found if you die, is a really tough choice. Retreat and bank all you have now, or risk it all for just that little bit more that you need for the next building or upgrade.

I've fought the first boss a couple of times, and won't be attempting that again soon, but it's great learning new synergies and clever strategies to optimise your next expedition and improve your chances.

Really addictive little game so far.

I'm playing this on Game Pass and enjoying it quite a lot.

I feel I have to ask though -is progress really, really slow, or am I playing it wrong?

I have done 11 runs now, but goth absolutely mauled by the first boss during my most recent loop. MY gear was a higher level than the "loop" I was on, but he seemed way higher still. I am doing the town building stuff as best I can, and can see how that unlocks better cards / buffs etc, but the resources required seem sky high compared to what I am bringing back each run (I understand you only get back 30% if you bail mid loop etc).

I have built a farm, smithy and one or two other things in my town, but don't have nearly enough resource to upgrade them or to buy the next things on the progression tree. I unlocked the Rogue Class, but that seemed trickier to play as (though I will focus on them more in time).

Is it just a game that is REALLY slow to open up, or is there a fundamental concept I have not mentioned that people who have played it are aware of?

I completed this last night. Once you have the encyclopaedia you can see what conditions are required for specific resource drops. Later you unlock Alchemy which enables you to convert more common resources into rarer ones.

My best advice for early to mid game is to aim for encounters with four or more enemies - a spider cocoon with a vampire mansion and chrono crystal next to it is a good combination. Avoid using road lanterns for a bit.

Edit - oh and stick with the Warrior class.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Interesting - thanks for the advice. I was unaware of an encyclopaedia but that sounds intriguing.

I had been trying to use the chrono crystal to maximise blooming meadows HP/day buff, but that is obviously tricky due to where you can position those two cards relative to one another. Sounds like I should be maximising spiders and vampires (videogames).

I am also using Oblivion card to eliminate Goblin camps. Is that a good move, or should I be farming them? I hit one with level 1 weapon and I simply was unable to do the DPS to kill them. I have been put off fighting them since!

Spiders are great because they're relatively weak and spawn quickly - more enemies = more drops. Also I believe there's a maximum of five enemies per encounter so placing a spider grove next to a goblincamp can flood that tile with with weaker enemies. You could also use a road lantern for the more dangerous bits of the path.

One strategy is to put a grove near to the goblin camp and then place a Blood Grove (if you have them) so it overlaps the camp - Blood Groves will kill any enemy that drops to 15% health (this works for bosses too). If you then delete the grove it buffs the blood grove so that enemies die at 20% health.

Also try and optimise your rock/mountain placement - did you know that placing any of those tiles in a 3x3 block creates a mountain peak? Use rock tiles to create the mountain peak and place mountains adjacent to where the peak will be. Once the peak is complete, avoid using rocks anymore. That will reduce the number of goblin camps.

Oh and if you're going for multiple enemies try and pick kit that has high 'damage to all' stats.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Some great advice here - thanks.

I knew about some of it (3x3 block placements of rocks / mountains), but did not know about deleting groves to buff blood groves. Is this stuff you learn organically in the game (aforementioned encyclopaedia), or is it all through trawling external wikis etc?

I will focus on maximising spider output as a starting point. And I will stop using rocks in favour of mountain cards. Cheers again.

It's all just stuff you find out as you play. There are a couple of tiles I never discovered, but I've had my fun and I'm moving on.

Cheers. Look forward to playing some more this afternoon. Moar spiders.
