It was on 3DS, but I wouldn't say you missed it.

Not a huge surprise after 2 broke 5m sales but I’m delighted about this

Looking forward to this one :)

Wonder if it'll be more like 1 (which I never played) which I believe was more exploration based? Or 2's level style game play?

Yeah, 1 didn’t have the mission structure of 2 but I swear people go on about it like it was a sprawling Metroidvania whereas in reality it was a linear 3-4 hour route through one mansion. I suspect the mission select was a design choice when moving it to handheld so I don’t think we’ll see that return in exactly the same way. I can see it retaining some kind structure though. People are suggesting it looked like a hotel in the trailer, so maybe it will have a level structure around each floor.

Starting the Direct off with a megaton I see.

I’m definitely up for this. I enjoyed 2 more than 1 despite the level structure: hopefully this has more continuous gameplay (although I wouldn’t mind being able to go through multiple mansions again).

Also, Polterpup’s back! Love the Polterpup.

After killing him in the Smash direct it's the least they could do.

I quite liked the level structure of 2, as you said it was probably a choice due to the 3DS's play style. Personally I wouldn't mind it keeping a similar structure to 2.

I'd heard 1 was quite short but I didn't think that meant only a few hours!

The mission structure also allowed them to mix up the levels depending on the mission like SM64/Sunshine and allowed for more accessible replayability for time trial and high scores. It also looks like its set in one massive strawberry float off tower rather then a number of mansions.

Not sure how I feel about this yet as I really liked how the mansions in 2 had distinct individual themes and I liked the outdoor elements. In my head 3 was going to be one central mansion with a large set of grounds around it to explore. A church and graveyard. Spooky gardens. A well you go down. Still a massive hotel sounds cool to.

LM2 was my fav (entirely) 3DS game so.... HYPE! :toot:

It could still have exterior areas to explore, it does look just like a big haunted tower currently though!

From the art you can see a greenhouse room with a tree inside (just under the final "n" in mansion), so exterior-like areas could be done inside.

Aye. But a hotel is a great choice for just one setting. Various function rooms, a casino, theater and of course haunted tea and coffee making facilities.

Don't forget the haunted swimming pool which turns out to be one huge ghost who you have to battle in some way.

At first I thought to myself 'huh, the 3DS remake is looking better than when I last saw it'. Will get around to playing that (really enjoyed 2) soon.

The level/mission based gameplay worked rather well in 2, so I'll be curious to find out what makes the original better in terms of structure.
