PostMacBook = MacFixed!

I got my old Macbook back off my brother and wanted to do a clean 10.4 install, but the disc drive kept getting read errors. I got the (lightly scratched) disks cleaned up at Blockbuster and even brought a fresh 10.5 upgrade disk and tried that but that kept getting read errors, so basically my DVD drive is borked and I have no OS to speak of on the machine.

I thought of 3 solutions:

1. Take it to the Apple store and get them to quote me a repair, which is cheaper than a new computer.

2. Use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to clone the 10.5 install disk onto my external HDD using another mac (I can borrow one from school) and then restoring mine using the cloned image.

3. Take out the internal HDD, stick it in a USB enclosure and then install 10.5 using another mac onto that drive, then put it back in.

The easiest option would be 2 because it should work, but can anyone give me any useful advice?

I'd use method 2 as taking apart one of them isn't worth it just to put the HDD in an enclosure if you can do it another way.

In all seriousness this. I've installed OSX on my PC using a flash drive. I'd also imagine an external USB DVD drive would be cheaper than getting your PC repaired by Apple.

Stupid Ass question: does an external DVD need drivers or is it just plug and play?

It should be plug and play. At least they are on PCs.

I grabbed a DVD drive from the IT guys at school and it worked a treat! Much faster than the internal one too, it installed 10.5 in 10 minutes. Now its back up to fully working condition.

Cheers, guys.

For the love of god, please don't suggest you even thought for one second about paying for a repair because it is "less than the price of a new computer"!! :P

Fix it yourself!!

You need a cotten bud and some white spirit vinegar, clean the lens with left-right, NOT circular motions (avoid scratching), this will more than likely clean a dirty laser lens that is very often the cause of disc read errors.

Anyway, Macs don't break..
