The whole film is a memorable set piece and I feel the final action scene works because everything before it has been a chase, while this is more of a desperate final roll of the dice. Plus the whole fight on the guitar guy's vehicle was wonderful

I thought the final train-top sequence in The Lone Ranger was better than anything I saw in Mad Max.

it's not even that - it's Max fighting Rictus and Furiosa ripping Joe's face off as well. no idea about this 'no set-piece' thing at all!

It's not that there are no set pieces. The fights at the start are just as intense and full on as the ones towards the end. What I'm saying is that they're all at that level of action, so for me there was no sense of escalation. Which meant that the fight at the end felt no-more bombastic to me than the ones before it.
I don't know. All I'm saying is how I felt about it having seen it. As I've said a few times now, I did really like it,and the action is fantastic. There were just one or two things I think they could have done a bit better. For me the lack of a clear stand out moment is one of them. It probably ties in with the fact that Max himself never really got to do too much and I was sitting there waiting for him to have that ultimate bad-ass moment that just didn't materialise.
When the next one comes out that's what I'd like. Something more focused on Max.

fair enough - not saying you're wrong, i just felt the opposite to you - that the final tanker battle to the pass was a suitable escalation.
although i do agree Max didn't have an obvious 'hero' moment in the final third of the film like Furiosa did. i didnt mind that but the other people i went with did so i can understand it.

That's the point, though. Max doesn't get that stand-out badass moment because he knows that for everyone to survive and come out the other side they all have to work
together. Case in point - He knows that Furiosa is more likely to make the shot than he is and they've only got one bullet left and he's totally okay with being half deaf as long as it gives everyone the chance to get out of there alive. He's lost too many people in the wasteland to risk ruining everyone chances of survival in pursuit of that one bad-ass moment.
Everyone is looking for redemption, and everyone gets it.
Max makes some friends and actually manages to keep (most of) them alive and safe this time, Furiosa gets the wives and the warriors to the new green place, and Nux sacrifices himself in a totally okay fashion and gives everyone else the chance to make it back in one piece.I'm not entirely sure that "all the action was hella bad-ass and bombastic and incredible and FIRE-BREATHING GUITARS OH MY GOD" is really that much of a criticism. Yeah, there weren't any obvious car chases/crashes/explosions that would have definitely been in the trailer, but surely that's a good thing? Because a trailer can't ruin all the best moments if the best moments are all two hours of the film.
Also Max's badass moment pretty much happens off camera when
he disappears on his own into the night to get some ammo: "...It's not his blood"

I know it was in the trailer, but to be honest that shot of him towards the end going over the battle on some sort of pole vault, explosions everywhere etc satisfied me as a grand, built up final battle style moment. Doesn't he take out the big bad dude shortly after as well? I can't quite remember... may have to go and see it again

If they do another film, I think we'll see max in more of a solo role. That said I wouldn't complain at all if furiosa returns.

It was one whole set piece. If you can't find any set pieces in that film- what the strawberry float are you doing watching films.
I don't get the whole no story or character development shite either. It's refreshing that a film is confident enough to hint at a character's background and development - followed up with small clues that lead you to build the picture for yourself.
I felt I knew enough about the main protagonists to care for and engage with. More than enough.

The only thing you've actually said so far is that you enjoyed the 50% real train sequence from The Lone Ranger more than the 90% real action sequences from Mad Max. Care to actually explain any more why you seem to absolutely despise it and anyone trying to sound positive about the whole thing?

Yes, spot on. I absolutely hate wimmin in my action movies. And I do indeed despise the film. Hate it.
Hate it hate it hate it. I do not quite like it (and do not adore Tom Hardy) and do not get embarrassed about cretins thinking it is the second coming.
