I really like it. Gameplay wise, it's nothing exciting but so far it's an impressively faithful remake of the original so I'm very happy.

Just being able to relive the story with a new lick of paint is good enough for me. I'm really glad that they didn't fill the map with collectables as well. Like I say, it's really faithful to the original.

Crazy how well I remember the street layout as well. And the intro have me goosebumps with the theme tune.

This month has been insane for nostalgia. This, Tony Hawk and Mario

Picked up the Trilogy from Tesco and it's a lovely little collection.
I'm about halfway through the story of Mafia 1 and it's really good, I like how it's similar to L.A Noire with it's world, it's there if you want to explore but it isn't loaded with loads of open world rubbish you'd get from a Ubisoft game.

Started Mafia 1 this week (picked it up for £13 - bargain!). Glitchy (what else is new, eh) with some rather janky GTA-style animation changes in places but very good nevertheless. I didn't play the original, so I'm experiencing this all for the first time.

I have to say I too much prefer this mostly linear focus inside what is still an open world than the current fascination of making games that are overwhelmingly enormous and then just padding them out with needless crap. I remember Mafia 2 still had Playboy magazine covers to collect if you so wanted, whereas this one has cigarette cards and comics. On the whole it's similar to something like The Getaway, where you're going from one mission directly into the next and following the story as you go, which is absolutely fine by me.

The original Mafia is one of my favourite games. I loved the more realistic approach compared to GTA, and it felt more like a world that you were part of and going about your business in, rather than a giant playground that had been designed for you to mess around in. The cigarette cards and comics were never part of the original game - they must've been added in for the remaster. I hope they kept the soundtrack, which was also brilliant. Such fond memories of that game.

Casting my mind back to the release, I think they changed the soundtrack, unfortunately.

I bought the trilogy on my XSX a few weeks back. Started on the original and blown away by how good it looks at times, especially the cut scenes. About halfway through I think (must admit I’ve played a few other games on rotation and this has slipped into backlog at the mo) but will defo carry on.

I had the original on PC and played the 2nd on a previous gen and loved that. Never played 3 before

3 is okay but I didn't like how the open world became Ubified. I didn't have the patience for it.

Coming to the conclusion of Mafia DE, and on the whole it's been really good, the story engaging and continually driving you forward, though the loading times when you die have been pretty diabolical. And this is on PS5 too, so I dread to think how horrific it must be on PS4. The amount of time I spent looking at Tommy Angelo beside a black screen on the train yard mission was beginning to grind my gears, even with pretty decent checkpointing. As the shoot-outs begin to ramp up, the aiming just isn't as precise as it needs to be - shots you're positive connected don't register, and rather than do that soft lock-on like so many other third person shooters, the aiming reticule will be pointing at the floor. It takes just a few well placed shots to be killed, with only the last quarter of your health meter recharging. Quite a bit of the scenery, such as wooden boxes and cars, can be blown to pieces as well - what with the enemy then lobbing in a few Molotov's for good measure, it's very easy to get taken out.

Some of the mechanics haven't kept pace with the incredible graphics, however it's mostly been counterbalanced by checkpointing that doesn't send you too far back (I think I'd find PS2 GTA's complete lack of checkpoints unbearable these days).

There's a mission set on a paddle steamer that rather reminded me of Hitman. Unlike that game however, it's just window dressing, the level not allowing you to attempt multiple ways of offing your target. The only thing you can do is throw a bloke who recognises you overboard, but it's inconsequential.
