We have the Apple One family plan thing that includes news+ and has some magazines like retro gamer in there

They could do with adding a lot more though.

I was never a subscriber to any magazine but as a teen if I had a few quid I'd grab a music or gaming mag on the way home: Q, kerrang, NME, gamestm, gamesmaster, the official rags (Xbox/PSM/ONM).

They're just too expensive now plus a lot of them have gone under anyway.

If you sign up to Readly via the Lidl Plus app (free), you can get a two-month free trial, then 15% off for the next six months. (The Barclays sign-up is still better if you intend sticking with it.)

I have a subscription for free to PressReader, a similar service to Readly that also has newspapers via my council library card.

So I read Edge and BBC Goodfood most months for free.

Maybe a deal sweetener for those of you with kids, or who are otherwise fond of Disney: huge range of Disney magazines now available on Readly. All the franchises.

It's surprisingly difficult to find UK comics suitable for children. My local WH Smiths only seems to sell the expensive puzzle+toy comics and 2000AD. Fortunately, there's a Forbidden Planet shop a few miles away that has a reasonable range of US comics for all ages.

I took out a Retro Gamer subscription during the first covid lockdown. It's a great mag, though I rarely find the time to read it cover-to-cover before the next issue arrives.

Still see it regularly in my Sainsbury’s.

Shame they don’t still do The Simpsons Comic/magazine. Some kids magazines have a certain run before they start their cycle again and repeat the content and I think this was one of them.

I keep seeing one being promoted on social media called The Phoenix.

Looks like the kind of comic I'd have loved when I was 9.

When i was 9 i would sometimes read Viz, as the newsagent always kept a big pile of them on the floor which meant they were easily accessable.

I've been a subscriber to Chiropractor's Monthly for years now... I've got a lot of back issues.

...

Anyway, the last magazine I bought regularly was ImagineFX, when I was going through a digital art phase. I had about six years' worth until it all became a bit unwieldy and took up too much space, so I unsubscribed, slowly re-read them all and ripped out any SUPER interesting bits, then after I'd finished with that particular issue, put them in for recycling one by one.

We're currently buying the Beano, Doctor Who Monthly and the occasional Marvel/DC TPB.

I've not heard of the Phoenix comic before, but will track down a copy. Thanks for the tip!

If I had a million bucks, what might I be able to do in this ChicxVille place you speak of?

I miss magazines, but with the rise of the internet most are out of date before they are printed. For some interests they are great still, but the cost of publishing and falling sales mean most are £5-£6 I’ve seen now.

Used to love taking OPSM, PlayStation Max, Gamesmaster, PSM back in the day. There was a period in the early 00’s as a kid where there seemed to be new gaming mag titles coming out each month.

I don’t think they are the same reading PDF versions/using apps, I’d rather just read web page articles.

Comics are probably the thing that has survived the downfall of magazines

I wasn't a huge fan of Viz but would have a laugh at some of the ridiculous stories.
One in particular stood out.

Sting of the Dump - Sting has fallen out of his private jet and landed in a dump, which is due to be filled in - how will he escape??

I loved late 80's early 90's Viz. My older brother would get it sometimes and I used to read it when no one was around.

That Sting one is Lee Healey isn't it? His strips are always the highlight of Viz for me.

It's not Lee Healey. I've got the original artwork, here.

Can't remember who it is but I'll dig it out. It's signed on both sheets.

Oh right! It's not identical but isn't too dissimilar a style, thought it might have been his earlier work or something.
