There's possibly already an old thread along these lines but I've been told off for thread necromancy before so

Manics

Anyway... anyone else see that Nicky Wire has a solo album out today? Will be interesting to see if it's any good. Looks like it's only avaliable on Bandcamp and not a physical release of any kind. Always a promising sign :shifty:

Also of the two albums last year I thought Even In Exile was far, far better than The Ultra Vivid Lament. Just me?

I watched this set too :datass: on iPlayer
Also watched Foos and Phoenix.

Was an interesting set - didn't think much of the Anchoress' vocals to be honest!

I really like the Holy Bible album. It's a shame what happened to Richie.

Can I shock you? I didn't like the Holy Bible at all.

Of their first 5 albums, that's the one I listened to the least yet aficionados rate it their best. But then I'm all about the tunes, and I didn't feel it had enough catchy ones compared to the others. :shifty:

I have seen the Manics (as I like to call them) live twice now, including their 20th anniversary "Holy Bible" tour. Awesome band that sound great live.

Yeah, she wasn't a patch on Nina Persson ( ). I love that song too.

Saw them supporting The Killers a couple of years ago. They were quite good.

I don't really like there big songs. Don't get the love for Motorcycle Emptiness for example. Although I do like all the stuff off of This is My Truth Tell Me Yours.

Generation Terrorists will always be my favourite, it's absolutely blistering. I'm not sure there are a better first 7 tracks on any album.

Also, I always thought Lifeblood was their most underrated album - it seemed to fly under the radar.

This is a legitimately great song!

Imrahil wrote:Also, I always thought Lifeblood was their most underrated album - it seemed to fly under the radar.

I think it is underrated too! It is very different to those that came before, though - easy comparisons to be made to the Coldplays and Travises of the era, which the Manics were never really about. It is good though
Know Your Enemy is my favourite album by far

My fave Manics songs, off the top of my head:

This (above) is probably my favourite single song of theirs. It's so beautiful.

And the rest, spoilered because there are loads that I bloody love.

An honourable mention:

Very nice! I have seen them only thrice: once at uni, once in Cardiff, and once at a festival very close to home. Epic each time, obvs.

The Holy Bible is one of my favourite albums of all time, and I'm pretty sure it's one of only a few albums where I could confidently sing every lyric from start to finish. I saw the anniversary tour at the Roundhouse and it remains one of the best gigs I've seen. Sadly I've since outgrown the tshirt I bought then as a memento. Considering chopping it up and turning it into a back patch for my gig jacket so I can at least do something other than leave it to go motheaten in a drawer.

Love this as one of the most complained about TOTP appearances ever.

It's a shame though, because I've really not felt much for their releases beyond Know Your Enemy and Lipstick Traces, (except Journal For Plague Lovers, natch, the collection of songs written using lyrics left by Richey,). Not that I don't appreciate that there's some great songwriting and musicianship on plenty of the stuff they've done since, and Rewind the Film still tugs at the heartstrings when I hear it, but that's definitely not the Manics I love. It's daft to expect them to continue to put out music with the same bite and anger as they once did, but what they do put out now really does just feel very safe an uninteresting to me.

I once queued up for six hours outside Cardiff Virgin Megastore to get a copy of their new album signed, and JDB didn't even acknowledge me. Cock.

Nicky Wire was lovely though.
