As we previously advised, we have been making music - to be more specific, we have been in Rockfield studio in Wales with Mr Steve Albini recording a new album, Journal For Plague Lovers.

All 13 songs on the new record feature lyrics left to us by Richey. The brilliance and intelligence of the lyrics dictated that we had to finally use them. The use of language is stunning and topics include The Grande Odalisque by Ingres, Marlon Brando, Giant Haystacks, celebrity, consumerism and dysmorphia, all reiterating the genius and intellect of Richard James Edwards.

The record is scheduled for release on 18th May and will be available on CD, deluxe 2 CD, download and LP.

Wolverhampton Civic Hall (June 1)
Brighton Dome (2)
Dublin Olympia (4)
Belfast Ulster Hall (6)

Really can't wait for this album, it'll be interesting to hear what kind of sound they go for though they seem to be indicating a harder, more 'Holy Bible' edge to it. Also great venue choice with the Ulster Hall, I'll definitely be picking tickets up for the gig :)

Good to see the north of England comprehensively covered there.

Seriously, surely they'd sell well in Manchester, Leeds, the North East, etc. I'm looking forward to the album, though.

So confident that this will be the best Manics material in a long, long time.
My favourite album ever, Seamonsters by the Wedding Present, had Albini at the helm and resulted in their best work so I see no reason why he won't work his magic again.

Also, what a glorious cover.

Already ordered my ticket for the Brighton Dome gig, really looking forward to both the tour and the album. They are going to be playing 2 sets apparently, the full album first then a greatest hits set. Awesome.

Having heard both Peeled Apples and Jackie Collins Existential Question Time I'm pretty confident that this is going to turn out to be something special.

I bloody love that cover too, it is like a young Richey but with blue eyes.

The gig scene in Sheffield is obscenely better than Either Manchester or Leeds. They should come here. I went to watch 2 local bands, Snow Patrol, The Killers and Metallica in the same WEEK last month.

It'll never be as good as THE HOLY BIBLE, which I think I'll play right now,................. very, very loud 8-)

(Edited due to being a cretin...)

True. But there is only a handful of releases by anyone that are as good as The Bible.

Listening to The Holy Bible now it seems far more provocatively attention-seeking than previously thought a dark, exciting, but earnest record. The lyrics are great just to read on the sleeve, though. Some vile stuff in there.

The Holy Bible is one of my favourite albums....EVER! The fact that the Manics' new one is getting compared to it has me very excited. Hopefully it'll be a good 'un as I've been a bit, well, disappointed at their last couple.

I used to a huge fan of MSP but that's sort of drifted away now. Glasgow Barrowlands was the first time that I saw them (during the Holy Bible tour) and it remains one of my favourite concerts.

I still remember, after the encore, Richey getting ready to take a massive swing at the floor with his guitar, Nicky touching him on the arm in a kind of "Not now mate" way and them both walking off stage :(

Unfortunately it worked like this.... Ritchie said: here's a bunch of lyrics wot I just wrote, now shut the strawberry float up James and sing them. Oh, and here's a guitar, play it like it's your dying day, oh and Nicky, here's a bass guitar, shut the strawberry float up and do the same, oh and short bloke, here's some drums - hit them, very hard and very often. This is MY album and you'll all do as you are strawberry floating told ! (I'm off now to throw myself off a tall bridge...)

And that is why the Manics will never produce an album anywhere near as good again !!

Can't in any shape or form agree with the attention seeking / provocative bit - the album is full of very human faults but in no way is it attention seeking - its just straight from the heart, (slash to the wrist), stuff - nothing disingeneous about it at all. And that, in effect, is why it is one of the greatest 'pop' albums ever produced - still not quite as good a Closer though YCK !!!!

(Oh gooseberry fool, I genuinely just realised, both my favourite song writers topped themselves...)

Being serious again for a moment I think Richey just realised he'd seen enough of man to realise he didn't need to see anymore. An epiphany of "oh, is that all there is?", if you like.

Kind of reminds me of the suicide note of George Eastman (the guy who invented the Kodak camera) which read -

"To my friends: My work is done. Why wait?".
