Nice start to my switch career. Need to unlock some more options for chassis and wheels and practise with the new pad but enjoyed that. Thanks for the games guys.

Yeah good times, I too have some practicing to do! I still don't think I've actually played every track yet!

Jazzem was indomitable tonight and both Tom and Hypes were on his tail! Kudos to SugarDave for a terrific effort, too - and Denny who has been away from the track for some time :toot: .

It was incredibly chaotic out there tonight thanks to a great turn-out! Thanks for playing and see you back on the grid next week :-).

It was chaos again tonight. Was mostly fun though was frustrating at times.

Was nice to have a few extra races with Jawa :toot:

See you on the track next week :)

Yeah I was on your shoulder that race and didn’t see a way of overtaking you...then the blue shell icon appeared...

At least I have a witness to my near almost-win :toot:

It's a completely different ball game with 12 players. Think I preferred the calmness of 6 on Wii U!

The problem is, you can literally go from 1st to last in a couple of seconds.

I quit after three races I'm afraid. You guys are just too good (or I'm just too bad) so after the third time of seeing myself go from 4th to 12th on one corner (usually the last one, natch) I couldn't take it anymore.

I'll go back, get some practice in and see where that gets me!

This is one of the things that gives me hope.

It may feel like it's totally chaotic and there are many occasions where you see yourself going from the front of the pack to the back in seconds with nothing you could seemingly have done about it, but at the end of the day generally the same people manage to come out on top each week so your fate must be in your own hands to a certain degree!

Just gotta git gud I guess!

My patience was tested last night when I had two consecutive 12th-place finishes, where the race ended before I crossed the line. That's fairly humiliating. :fp:

I'd be interested to see what the good guys are doing differently, TBH. I know 'snaking' was thing in MK64 - I'm assuming they must be boosting at every single opportunity.

Which is weird, because one of my best finishes last night came on Toads Turnpike, and I hardly did any powerslides.

Edit: @Jenuall - agreed - there's definitely some skill involved or the same people wouldn't be winning. I'd just like to know what those skills are

Edit 2: I still had an absolute blast and will be joining every week I can.

It is tough, Taf, especially for newcomers who may not be familiar with the tracks. For me, learning the tracks was critical - not necessarily the short cuts (which I generally still don't know) but the turns and straights of every course. They will gradually become in-grained into your memory and your navigation of them will improve.

Another tip - and you may already know this! - is not to be hasty in using weapons that you pick up. I used to fire them as soon as I picked them up but, from watching folk like TWA and Jazzem, I noticed that they hang on to stuff and use shells as protection (i.e. drag it behind them) rather than as a weapon. Not always, of course, but very frequently.

The third aspect is patience and that is hard. You gotta think that you're stepping onto the track with some guys that have played the game regularly over a long period of time. Set your targets at an achievable level; if, say, you finish around 11th than set a target of 9th. Race by race you are building your experience and familiarity with the game... over time you are improving.

Oh, and yeah - sometimes things just won't go your way. That's the beauty* of Kart :) .

* Horror and frustration.

Taking the racing line, boosting at every possibility, boosting on jumps and using streamlining boost to overtake. Plus efficient use of items. Those are the things you need to do well.

The reason the best people keep getting to the top is because they do all these well. It’s also easier to hold first place if you move away from the pack as blue shells are your biggest danger whereas the chasing pack has a lot more going on.

Edit: also just to say, you’re playing against people who have been playing it for 4 years, and have hundreds of hours practice so that’s worth remembering!

Boost, racing line and bananas and shells for protection. Also being at the front or near leaves you more free from the middle order carnage.

Once I get more comfortbale with the controller and get my kart to how I like it - i'd like to try and give Jazzem a run for his money.

Felt great to be back on MK Monday.

Cheers for that. I do boost jumping sometimes, but not consistently enough. Likewise the power slides.

Totally take your point about using items better, too - it's just hard when you're in the pack and basically being rogered every few seconds :slol:

Practise online. The best way to get better is to play every Monday night. You learn people's little tricks and some of your own.

Grum went from being a nice guy to being a dirty bastard. You've just got to serve your apprenticeship for a while. Don't be disheartened.

Ha! Yeah, I think I need to take myself online more, maybe do some research re: shortcuts. How much difference do racer/kart/wheel choices actually make by the way? I know the basics (big character = faster but slower acceleration, smaller = fast acceleration but more vulnerable to being shunted) but nothing beyond that.
