Does it have mini-games?

Edit: Famitsu gave it 33/40.

Disappointingly, from comments online form people who have managed to buy copies early, sounds like offline content remains light. Apparently it has only three tournaments and the Adventure Mode is being pegged at 3 hours long.

Well that's disappointing :(

Disappointing if it is fairly light on content.

Contrary to what I thought though, I've been hearing that this game is actually very mechanically deep which is good.

Dang. By most accounts it is a good game; great in multiplayer (and I'm looking forward to trying the online play) but a little short and difficult in single player (adventure) mode. I find this a little frustrating as it's basically the Wii U's Ultra Smash and these online and aventure modes are the "new" bits.

I haven't played many tennis games in recent years, though, so I'm keen to try this out.

In two minds about this now. I haven't been playing my Switch lately, only the odd game of MK8 and am disappointed this one isn't as great as I thought it would be. Having already bought Okami and Dark Souls Remastered on the PS4 I don't really want to buy either again, so am left with Toad's Treasure Trackers too look forward to. I may pick up Bayonetta 2 as I never played it on the Wii U.

I think what makes it worse is that this game is priced higher than PS4 blockbusters and this is effectively an upgraded version of a Wii U game.

To be fair, it has a lot of new gameplay mechanics to Ultra Smash, which is clearly where most the work has gone.

The adventure mode does sound disappointing though as that was a big feature longterm fans of the series wanted.

#No worries, it's not a tennis game anyway.

This is very much looking like only going to be good value if you plan to play a lot of multiplayer, either locally or online.

I wanted this for singleplayer, I have no interest in online. Very hesitant now :(

EDIT:

Apprently local multiplayer is split-screen too? What?

I think that's to accommodate for the trickshots which you aim first person in, though given that you can turn those off it'd be nice to have option for single screen.

If nothing else, it is nice that all players get a view behind their character as is preferred in these games, it's always a bit of adjustment to try play from the other side of court w/default camera.

Does this not have any mini games like the GC game had?

Also, I could see them supporting this with more content down the line. Nintendo have been pretty good with supporting games like this recently

- A lot of depth in mechanics, lots to learn that can change shift of match
- 16 characters from start, 3 to unlock
- Two players can play online

Cons

- AI really easy offline, dont see option to up it. Won first tournie first time no problem.
- 3 tournies and Adventure mode dosen't seem a lot offline but ill be playing a lot online tournaments anyway.

Really fun game will be putting a lot of hours in. Online not up yet so cant try it

Edit - Tournies online working, didnt get schooled at least...

Online ranking same as the demo? Ie a points total that just keeps going up like Mario Kart?

This is sounding like a bit of a disaster. Apparently there's no proper stage select in MP, and you can only play best of 3 or tie breakers. The concept of a set doesn't even exist. I saw a comment saying you can only be Mario in singleplayer, but I assume that has to be false.

It's a damn shame as the actual tennis is bloody brilliant. Do Nintendo ever patch features into games? Knowing them I can't imagine they do more than basic bug fixing.

See Splatoon.

I really hope Nintendo support this as I thought this would be a guaranteed purchase but it’s sounds terribly barebones.

Same. It's weird how Nintendo's major games are so incredibly polished but the second tier games are so hit and miss.

I sort of half agree with this, and half disagree.

I think the second tier stuff like this is polished. I think most people are saying that core gameplay in Mario Tennis is really solid, with plenty of depth and skill.

But it's baffling design designs that stop the polished gameplay shining throughout the entire package. Or minor frustrations and restrictions that chip away at the edges.

They're definitely polished but games like Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Party, etc are 6/7 out of 10's and then you have the sports games that are mechanically very good but often lacking in content. I realise it would be very difficult to have at the standard of Zelda and Mario but it would be nice if the difference wasn't so great.

I'm enjoying the game so far, but there seems to be some pretty ridiculous oversights in it.

Turns out in the 'Free play' mode, which is where you can setup games, you can't play more than either a single 2 game set or a tiebreak competition.
