What do you mean they had no choice? Disney hired him AFTER these tweets were made, he’s apologised for this 6 YEARS ago. Should he have deleted these tweets? Sure but then you’ll have people saying ‘oh he’s trying to hide his past’.

There’s no such thing as second chances anymore in the social space. And you’re entirely angry at Gunn? Really? You’re being played if you think that’s the case. The right are playing the left against each other and this is just another small example of that.

Every time a Trump tweet is found contradicting something he said recently, do we all sit back and say "He's allowed to change his mind!!"? No, we mock him. When Roy Moore was accused of soliciting underage girls many years ago, did we say "Oh, that was ages ago he's probably changed!"? No.

So, when it's discovered that a left-wing director made paedophilic and incestual jokes, can we hold him to a different standard simply because we like him? No, he needs to face up to the same consequences. If he doesn't the whole system of accountability falls apart.

This was a victory for the alt-right, forcing a prominent left-wing director into disgrace. But they did it with his own words, accurately. Gunn should be strawberry floating incensed with himself.

The difference is Trump is still saying those things. Roy Moore (allegedly) committed a crime.

If Gunn is still saying those things then it’s fair enough to fire him. But these all appear to have been many years ago, should we never forgive and forget?

We are in very dangerous territory if people are defined by stupid gooseberry fool they said a decade ago.

Milo.

EDIT: We are in dangerous territory. You're on twitter, you know what it is. It's a burning oildrum of hatred and recrimination where expressing a political opinion as a celebrity is tantamount to marking yourself with a huge flaming target. Gunn knew this, yet the tweets remained up.

Milo.

Milo’s peodophile comments were not 10 years before, they were a year before the clips surfaced.

Milo also hadn’t changed and was still being a deliberately offensive prick.

We're coming at this from a leftist viewpoint. We like Gunn, we hate Milo ergo Gunn should be allowed to prove he's changed and Milo should disappear. Realise that the Right see it the other way, that Gunn is a traitorous rabble-roused and should be disappeared and Milo should be spared.

Accountability doesn't work if it's partisan.

That’s not it at all.

The difference is the time elapsed and the subsequent change in behaviour.

If Milo had made his comments 10 years before and had stopped creating faux controversy, then I would be happy to ignore the old tweets/comments.

I’ll reitereate, he apologised for this 6 years ago. I truly do not understand where your line is drawn, does an apology have a life span? I’ll point out now before this goes south, certain things will never be forgivable. It’s a case by case basis as far as an apology is concerned so I don’t want to turn this into a ‘oh but this person said this’ analogy.

If we want to take this back to the start, he shouldn't have been hired in the first place. That’s where the punishment should have been. From what I see of Gunn on Twitter he’s mainly fighting for progressive causes and hasn’t made an edgy “joke” like he did back then. Believe it or not, he may have changed his ways? I know, shocking that people can change for the better. If this was something that was said last week, of course eyebrows will be raised and pitchforks would be at the ready.

You’re whole argument doesn’t work across the board. It’s not so black and white which is sometimes so frustrating talking to a person like you Taf because your region of error is so narrow. Like now, I just don’t get how you’ve connected Trump and Gunn in this situation. Trump has continually being aggressive, bullish, a straight out liar basically. It’s right that he is being called out on these things because he’s a liar and continues to be one. Gunn made some awfully shitty humour tweets 10 years again which is now being used against him.
This is not the same situation and shouldn’t be compared as such.

I disagree entirely. Time means nothing on twitter when you can drag quotes from a person and present them to the masses as if they were written yesterday.

Also, this is Disney we're talking about. They fired directors for 'not meeting their vision' or 'trashing a house' or 'making one bad film.' They are notoriously brand protective. Once these tweets were exposed that was it. Again...Gunn knew this!

You were right about one thing though:

Time might not mean anything on Twitter, but Twitter doesn’t (or at least shouldn’t) define society.

If we are never allowing people to move on from things they wrote 10 years ago, then we are all strawberry floated.

You're on twitter. Did you not get this until now?

EDIT: Privacy and reasonable doubt are things of the past in the online sphere. If you put something out there, whenever you put it out, you live with it. That's the truth of twitter. For the last time, as I feel I've gotten my point across as well as I'm going to, Gunn knew how this ecosystem worked, how its predators functioned because he had been a predator himself. Not removing those tweets would turn out to be the biggest mistake of his career, and I place the blame for this entirely on him.

I get the stupid outrage from people that think Twitter is something important. I don’t take any notice of 10 year old tweets unless they have an actual relevance to that person now.

What you are arguing Taf is that people can’t change and cannot move on from things they said a decade before. It’s insane and is massively counter productive when it comes to allowing people to move on from their past mistakes.

Imagine a current member of the alt-right. Where is the motivation to move away from that if it’s going to be held against them for the rest of their lives?

There's a difference between arguing for something, and arguing that something exists. I'm doing the latter here, and this very situation has already proven me correct.

Twitter should not be the world entire. People should be given second chances. People do change. But none of these concepts apply online, where the concrete truth of something's posting overrides any attached mitigating circumstances.

It is strawberry floating terrible. But it is real.

That sucks. The 3rd movie will start shooting soon and they’re probably going to have to scrap the story that’s in place for it. Plus Gunn was meant to oversee all of the space movies, of which there’s going to be a lot moving forward.

At the same time I didn’t enjoy GotG2 as much as the first. A few months ago I was reading an article about him not being the main person behind the script of the first, it was actually a woman called Nicole Perlman who picked the Guardians as a movie choice and who wrote the first script, so maybe Marvel can get her back for the third. I don’t know if she directs too, but Guardians is a pretty generic action/adventure type movie so there should be lots of options out there for directors. And Marvel have had this close to the wire situation before with Ant Man so they’ve had plenty of practice

Hopefully the third movie now has lots of gayness and transgenders to piss the alt right off :datass:

I'd always heard that Gunn scrapped most of the Perlman script (it didn't include the Walkman and 70s soundtrack which pretty much defines the tone of the whole franchise). Would be interesting to see the original Perlman script. I didn't realise that Taika Waititi had done a script for Moana, too! Would have been great to see what he would have done with that.

I think this is an absolutely ridiculous overreaction by Disney.

“We were aware of the tweets, he regrets them and has apologised and has changed as a person since”.

Done. Within a few days it would be forgotten about. By firing him they draw even more attention to it as well.

I don't think he should have been fired and I do think Disney have overreacted. Given the current climate I can see why they've done it but I don't agree with it.
Shame but a sign of the times I suppose.

Same. I do kind of agree with Taf though, you can't just pick and choose who you hold accountable for this sort of thing.

So yeah anyways I just got round to watching Black Panther for the first time today and instantly one of my favourite of the MCU that's just about topped by Winter Soldier/Civil War and Thor Ragnarok. Actually thought it was so good I watched it twice today (once with the babs earlier today and again with the missus tonight)

And Michonne from Walking Dead was hot as fuckery during the South Korea scene  :datass:
