I'm sure I saw this game has a prominent Black Lives Matter mural on display in the city? It's already deciding to provide some social commentary with that and if it skirts the issue of why there would be a Black Lives Matter mural on display in the first place then that's legitimately worthy of its own critical commentary.

That's a very fair point to be fair. Maybe it does then have a responsibility?

If that's the case, then I absolutely agree.

But can you not show support without expanding on the issue? Isn't it acceptable for Insomniac to acknowledge the struggle and indicate their stance while also accepting that this game isn't the stage for a political debate?

Spider-Man had a pride flag in one section of the game but we didn't get uppity that LGBTQ+ rights weren't a major part of the story and setting.

This is the paradox of a game including POC representation or taking any stance (even softened) on a social justice issue. It's a bit 'damned if you do, damned if you don't', particularly when reviewers' passion for an issue is intertwined with their daily experience and desire for hyper-personalised representation. It's a lot safer and potentially less negativity-inducing to simply adopt the vaguest possible social condemnation (Ghost Recon: Breakpoint). For example, the VICE review for the original Spider-Man describes it as "competent, fun, and very safe". It sure was "very safe", but it got a more favourable review than Miles Morales' did.

Actually reading the review, Gita Jackson makes this exact point pretty much from the off! It's the basis for most of her social critique of the game, that at its heart it's a story very specifically about a Spider-Man for Black people (I think this game is written by Evan Narcisse, right?) but it simply isn't (or maybe more accurately can't) be brave enough to link why Black Lives Matter protests took place with the central typically superficial theme of heroism, and does similar things with other political subjects.

Maybe it feels harsh that such commentary is centred on this Spider-Man game specifically when it's a problem with basically every big video game release, and many superhero stories in all media, but I can't see anything egregious about her referencing her own real world experiences and judgements when a game attempts to cover these kinds of politics and themes.

By her own, and others, accounts it still sounds as compelling as Spider-Man was as a game.

But they're glorifying the police, the organisation that are persecuting black people on a regular basis. You can't say you support the people being persecuted and then paint the aggressors as a wonderful group.

The equivalent of your example was if they had a pride flag up but then glorified an organisation that discriminates against gay people.

They don't have to expand on the issue to the extreme, no one is saying that, but they really could have toned down how they depict the police force.

I've only just realised they've changed the Peter Parker face cap actor.. probably old news to you lot, but I really liked the PS4 Peter!

He looked like he had a few years of experience under his belt, a bit like Peter B Parker from Spider-verse I guess.
Now it looks like Spider-man is 17.

Yeah I’m not a fan of the change for the reasons you mention, I see some MM footage where Peter is chatting to Miles (both unmasked) and Peter looks younger than Miles.

Good to see the PS4 version punching its weight.

Eurogamer reviewed the PS4 version. As a rough summary: Great game, albeit a little short and with a couple of glitches. I definitely want to try it out at some point but will await a price drop.

I think you can safely substitute “Organisation” for “Police” and any example would hold true.

If I have the PS4 version of Miles Morales, and get the PS5 version free, will there be an option to pay £20 on top to get the Spiderman Remastered?

If not I’ll just wait for the disc version of PS4 Miles Morales when it fell in price.

I believe Insomniac said there would be a way to buy Spider-man Remastered separately, but I don't think they've announced it yet.

If you buy the PS4 version of Miles Morales then you can upgrade to the PS5 version at no additional cost; and you will have an option of paying $20 to purchase Spider-Man Remastered for PS5.

If you have the PS4 version of the original Spider-Man, there is no upgrade option to get the Remastered version for PS5; it will only be available as part of the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for PS5.

Source: Sony statement to Kotaku.

It's a bit messy and, rather like Activision a few years ago with their initial approach of only making Call of Duty 4 Remastered available as a part of their more expensive edition of Infinite Warfare, I suspect that in time we'll see Spider-Man Remastered available to purchase separately.

I'd like to get the remastered version of Spider-Man but I'd rather they release it physcially.

I preordered the PS5 digital version Ultimate Edition of Miles Morales ready for the PS5 next week. As the last time I got codes from CDkeys, they take ages in sending it out (once I didn’t get a code until 12 hours later! Most of the time I got it within half a hour.)

Got the PS4 digital version of Miles Morales FOR FREE. It’s now downloading on the PS4. Now I’m going to resist playing it until the PS5 arrives as I want to experience it on the PS5 first.

GR, send me your strength.
