I think I only had Ghost House on card.
My Master system was the UK launch version. What a thing of beauty that was.
Golvellius is in my top 10 games ever. Amazing.

I'd also suggest looking at:

Enduro Racer
Sonic the Hedgehog - totally different to the Megadrive version
Fantasy Zone
Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap
Golvellius

Alex Kidd
Shinobi
Operation Wolf

Yeah, the cards are pretty cool; I like the look of 'em and the thinner cases, too. The manuals are also orientated different to the carts (they've vertical rather than horizontal). IIRC I have a few card versions; Hang On, My Hero and Ghost House.

The Mega Drive's Power Base Converter allows MS carts and cards to be used; with, as far as I can remember, just one game that doesn't work - F-16 Fighter on card.

Aaaaaaand... just watched it!

I have a lot of nostalgia for this version of the game; it came as a pack-in with the Master System console when I bought it whilst on a day out at the coast in 1987. The game came on a Sega Card, with the game later available as a cartrdge and also then built-in to some versions of the console.

Like you say, the controls are tricky at first but a bit of time gets you into the feel of the game. I recall that, as you highlighted, it's important to use your gears to help adjust your speed.

I'm enjoying your focus on MS stuff, dude!

Hang-on was the first Master System game I played, it came built-in to my MS along with Safari Hunt.

Have a vivid memory of playing it on boxing day with Led Zeppelin playing in the background on the first CD player my parents had.

The MS console that I have know is that same model :-). I sold my original [launch day) MS and all my games about 25 years ago. I've still not really gotten over that mistake :( . I did re-buy the console and a number of games again though; mainly via eBay between 2007 and 2010.

Hang On x Led Zeppelin :datass: . To,be honest, Ironhide, that team-up would really rock!

Yeah, the launch model in the UK had Snail, the hidden maze game, built in; and Hang On was included on Sega Card. I picked up My Hero, another card game that was later available on cart, alongside the system.

I didn't get the Master System till after the Mega Drive when I started buying older stuff but my older Cousin had a model 1 machine and I used to play it at his a bit.... My middle brother also used to take me to all kinds of young Ladies houses and essentially sit me in front of there model 2 Master Systems, I now realise I was young and stupid and he was off having sex with them upstairs while I was bamboozled by the console

Ohhh and Mommy Operation Wolf is a good shout as it was an Arcade game first as well.

It basically cemented my love of gaming and rock music at the same time.

Who knew that a Master System thread would lead to such revelations?! To be this good takes Sega! .

With us chatting here about Sega Cards, this was great timing!

Happy birthday, Master System :toot: .

My Hero and Ghost House were both brilliant. I played the heck out of them. My copy of Hang On was not on a card, but a dual cart with Astro Warrior (also excellent). And the console was/is OG Snail.

Out Run was, of course, the first purchase. Quartet was another early game for me - and another arcade conversion. Despite the name, the MS version obviously could only have two players at once, but still chosen from the original four.

KER9000, keep em coming!

I still think the Master System was better than the NES and I will die on that hill. I was a sega kid in the 1980’s which makes be biased but I’ve been back and played a lot of 8-bit Nintendo titles and I can see how influential they were but in no universe is Metroid better than Zillion or Wonderboy III.

Games worth reviewing? Action Fighter, Zillion, Zillion 2 (a very different game), Golvellius, Wonderboy III: The Dragon’s Trap, Asterix and the Great Rescue, Operation Wolf, Alien Storm, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

They were the first two games that I picked up :-). Both were Sega Cards... and, man, were they tough to play! The flickering sprites on My Hero are bloody awful but I still love it  .

I legitimately couldn't get past the first enemy in My Hero, I suspect I had a dodgy cart as no matter what you tried doing it would just kill you and return to the beginning every time.

The most properly difficult game I had was The Ninja (which I got when I was 10 while recovering from minor surgery on my achilles tendons), I could get to the 4th or 5th stagefairly often but only saw the later levels while watching my dad play it.

I have recorded footage of Alien Storm already so that's probably pretty high on the list, this blooming heat has been getting in the way, plus I am also working of a Podcast and a few other projects.

Alex Kidd in Miracle world is a must. Do Shinobi World too, I want to see if our opinions differ or not.

It's amazing that the MS got so many Mega Drive ports/versions; the console was just selling so well in the UK and Europe. Streets of Rage, Road Rash, Alien Storm, Sonic... some big titles.

Well I havent done anymore Review related work, proberbly wont have time to do any work towards a review till Monday but I did learn which version of the Master System 1 I have

its the MODEL: 3010 – The very first original one which comes with a basic Snail Maze game which is accessed by Holding UP and pressing A & B when starting the unit without a game inserted. On the one hand would have been cool to have a real full title built in but its kind of cool for it to be one of the very first ones.
