I think it still looks excellent! After Burner is such a good looking game even with the MS downgrade

I think all things considered they did a great job porting it... It amazes me how good some studios did in the old days porting arcade stuff into the home, there are even some games on the 48k spectrum which despite looking basic give a good approximation of the arcade experience.

It's great to see a bit of focus on the Master System, kerr! I touched upon this on Pedz' Discord, but I was at first taken aback at just how good the MS version looks... until I realised that you were showing the archade version ahead of the MS port  . It is still good, though; even though the MS has hugely weaker tech than the arcade machine, gameplay retains the core feel and the graphics are pretty much as decent as they could be. I recall that this was one of the biggest ("4 megabit"!) games on the console.

I'm looking forward to further assessments of MS titles, dude.

I did a few master system videos like 6 years ago or something, Some of which compared MS games to the Megadrive versions but I thought why not one step further compare a game to it's arcade counterpart.

Glad you enjoyed the video.

I always like seeing games compared against the arcade original and other formats; especially for games from the 80s and 90s as tech often varied so much. The constraints of the tech often demanded some creative solutions and that's where you often saw the same game looking substantially different across the machines.

MS Afterburner is a fantastic port, up there with the port of Space Harrier in terms of technical wizardry.

I was obsessed with this game. I’d phone my local game shop at least once a week to ask if they had it or knew the release date. Seems so strange in hindsight, retailers not having any idea of release schedules. When I finally got my hands on the game, it didn’t disappoint.

The SEGA Master System II was my first console, slotting in maybe a year or so prior to the PlayStation. I can't pinpoint an exact time in my mind, but it must have been late 94 or 95. Someone was just throwing theirs out and my Dad brought it home one day with 4 games. Sonic was already pre-loaded on the system, but the others were boxed (in those strangely bland looking white boxes with a background that more resembled school maths paper). I think the console pins that read the cartridges eventually broke, but I do regret binning the games. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse was definitely one, and either Golden Axe or Golden Axe Warrior. Can't for the life of me remember the 4th.

Well there will be more Master System Arcade conversion videos as I already have another script finished and I am half way through the third.

And watched! It's great to see you really getting into these MS games, kerr.

I liked your comparison of one of the music tracks to a Blake's 7 theme... I'm not too familiar with that but it did make me laugh  .

I probably wouldn't be quite so harsh on the graphics; I like 'em. They *are* blocky and I believe this is because they've used character-blocks rather than sprites. The ol' MS just doesn't have the tech oomph to display lots of sprites at once - at least, not as many as would be required by Sega's super-scaler arcade versions - and the character approach harks back to (some of) the 8-bit micro systems. It sure was a downgrade from the arcade version but, for me, it was probably the best outcome as at least some speed and colour was retained.

But, hey, I'm loving these looks back at MS games and I'm keen to discover what other titles you're gonna shine a light on :toot: .

At the moment I am making good progress on my OutRun video, and I am also thinking of looking at Alien Storm, Hang On, Mercs maybe Dynamite Duke

Sounds like a decent lineup of games Kerr.

I'd also suggest looking at:

Enduro Racer
Sonic the Hedgehog - totally different to the Megadrive version
Fantasy Zone
Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap
Golvellius

Enduro Racer is one I would definitely look at, as at the moment im looking at Arcade games that made there way to the Master System

I did a video on comparing Master System games to Megadrive games years ago and I think it was Golden Axe and Sonic I talked about but it was done so long ago I am sure the sound would hurt the ears of anyone who tried to watch it.

More great work, Kerr - I'm sensing that this MS series you're building is gonna run really well!

I, too, think that this port was one of the MS's best. Technically it's a big step down from the arcade version but the gameplay and vibe pretty much remain intact. It's still very playable today.

I wonder what MS games are gonna appear here next...

Aaaaaaand... just watched it!

I have a lot of nostalgia for this version of the game; it came as a pack-in with the Master System console when I bought it whilst on a day out at the coast in 1987. The game came on a Sega Card, with the game later available as a cartrdge and also then built-in to some versions of the console.

Like you say, the controls are tricky at first but a bit of time gets you into the feel of the game. I recall that, as you highlighted, it's important to use your gears to help adjust your speed.

I'm enjoying your focus on MS stuff, dude!

Thank you very much Jawa I'm glad your enjoying this stuff, I just figured Master System Arcade Conversions would be a good little niche. I need to set my Master System 1 up as I have 1 game on card teddy boy and haven't seen a game run off card in years.
