Is there any free software out there that will allow me to easily merge PDF documents and/or split PDF documents?

Cheers

You can split PDFs in Google Chrome!

Open the PDF in Google Chrome, then go to "Print".

Change the Printer to "Save as PDF", then choose the pages you want to be in this new PDF (as if you were printing just a select number of pages).

Then click "Print" and it'll save it as a new PDF.

Print to pdf is a feature that is mostly overlooked, but can get you out of a fair few situations. It's good for quickly stripping out security, markups and so on if you don't have a pro level acrobat reader to do it directly.

Another pdf question!

I need to convert a pdf to "be the subject of OCR". I understand what that is, but have no idea how to convert my pdf to be OCR using Acrobat Reader DC (the free software I have).

Are there any free programs that would do it?

PDF24 Creator is probably your best bet. So well established, it even has its own Wikipedia page.
