A topic for the discussion of the Playstation/Xbox/Gamecube versions of the Metal Gear Solid Series.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance/MGS3 Subsistence

Still excellent games to this day, which I myself will play during a random session during the night and still find myself immersed within the excellent storylines, drama and gameplay. Truly a legend in the industry and history of certainly the Sony consoles, demands, no, expects its own Retro Gaming Topic.

I've played 1 and 2 and hated them both. I really don't see the appeal. Sorry.

Only played the first on the Gamecube and loved it, but first MGS2 on the ps2.

MGS3 was also great and MGS4 was just brilliant.

I never got a chance to play any of the extra versions like Substance and Subsistence along with the Special Missions on the original PlayStation.

I've played 1,2,3 and Twin Snakes. And the Metal Gear games included on the special edition MGS 3 version.

1 and Twin Snakes are excellent. Some of the complaints levelled against Twin Snakes are hilarious though, for instance the claim Snake back flips too much. He does inappropriately back flip in a couple of scenes yes, but its like 4 seconds in an 8 hour game. Get over it, its worth the pay off for all the other improvements.

I thought 2 was awful. It starts really well in the ship, but when Raiden is introduced the game goes to gooseberry fool. Its set on a strawberry floating oil rig for a start - blandest setting for a game ever? The characters are all over the place (a vampire? Really Kojima? And as for Fatman...), the story has absolutely needless plot-twists, and the script is far too self-indulgent. Rubbish.

3 would have been good but it was ruined by game crippling flaws. Because it was outdoors in a far larger playing area the top-down viewpoint was useless, and the only way to progress was to flip to first-person every five steps. The camo system really did nothing to help this. That you have to pause the game every other minute for any one of dozens of reasons (weapon/equipment swaps, maps, camo, food, mid-battle surgery :fp: ) was another serious issue of mine. It made the game very stop-start, and with the camera issue I found it gave the game a leaden pace. Still better than 2 though, but then so is aids.

The original is my favourite in the series, followed by Sons of Liberty and then Snake Eater.

I did play The Twin Snakes but I prefer the original version. I didn't particularly like the additions to the cutscenes, a few of the voices weren't the same (for example, the "Shut up in there, willya?" guard) and the first-person view made it easier. It was still a good game, though! :P

In Sons of Liberty I would have preferred to play as Snake more often, but playing as Raiden wasn't that bad. Something I would have liked to see was the chance to play Snake's side of the story. Snake Eater was good as well, but I didn't think it was as good as the previous two. I really should play it again at some point as I think I've only completed it once.

I've got the Twin Snakes but I couldn't really get the hang of it. I wouldn't mind giving it another go, but I don't know where I put the game :fp:

I brought the Gamecube just for twinsnakes then sold it soon after, what a great game. Imagine my orgasm when I played MGS4 and you went back, the music and everything! I nearly cried!

Best series ever. But I've been through it too many times to spend ages typing up how I feel about it.

Basically, although the last two in the series didn't match my hype - I wouldn't be gaming today if it weren't for Hideo Kojima & MGS.

Massive fan of the series, still can't decide if I like 1, 3 or 4 the best. 2 is definitely my least favorite though, the story just seemed to go a bit silly once you got on Arsenal Gear. :?

Never played the original version of 3 though, only Subsistence, so never had to experience the supposed 'Awful' camera angles in it, thank god!

I love all of them to death, even Portable Ops. I would rank them:

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Metal Gear Solid 2
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops.

I grew up with these games.

:fp:

I know it's taste, but I can never get people ranking MGS2 the lowest in the series, It's almost on a par with the original, and walks over the two that followed.

I disagree, personally I found Metal Gear Solid 3 to be absolutely immense, even better than MGS2. To be fair though I would rate MGS2 higher than The Twin Snakes, perhaps not the PSone original.

I would probably rate them...

MGS3
MGS1
MGS4
MGS2
Twin Snakes
Portable ops

Only played the first two, I loved the second one. Constantly found myself arsing about with collecting dogtags and unlocking the secret items, really gave it a lot of replay value. Have yet to play 3 and am looking out for a reasonably priced copy of Subsistence as the extras on that look pretty damn worthwhile (it's the new camera viewpoint that interests me most).

Have you played 2 again recently? I held it in high regard for a number of years but want back to it shortly before MGS4 hit and suddenly some of the major complaints made about the game came to mind as I was playing. I still love the game, but I'd say it's my third favourite behind the original and MGS4.

I really should give MGS3 another play through as I think I've only played it once on each version I have (original with rubbish camera and Subsistence).

Don't get me wrong - I do as well, it's just that whereas before I would have had it right up there with the original in terms of my ranking of the series, but as time goes on I've noticed more of its flaws. I still enjoyed it more than the majority of games I've played, but it's just not the best MGS in my eyes.

No.1 is the best. Hands down.

i agree with this man here. first is best, it may be because it was the first 3d game i played and completed about 10 times , when i was quite young. and the tanker section on the second gives me this nostaligc feeling, its a bloody good setting and i know loads of people agree. but gameplay and story in 3 is the most advanced and best, and eva's hot. there all bloody good. i only one which im finding hard to replay is 4 :/

I loved Twin Snakes for the over-the-top cut scenes. Thats what i like though... i would rather watch a Die Hard movie than say the Shawshank Redemption although they are both great you know?

I'm kind of dissapointed in my self because i love the whole MGS thing but i never finished MGS4. I got to that Raven Boss, took me ages to get his health down low and died, tried and failed again then i just could not be arsed to try it again.

For me its got to go-

MGS:TS
MGS
MGS3
MGS2

Finally someone with sense!

Like the cutscenes & codec? Thing is, I absolutely loved every second of those. I used to be able to say the lines along with the characters. They had great acting, and graphics for its time. What other complaints were you referring to?

I now believe that even though the first game is my favourite - it's such a narrow win over MGS2 that I now believe Substance is the series best release. MGS2 + 501 MGS Missions is unbeatable  I golded every Alternate Mission in that game, and every VR Mission aside from some weapons and Variety mode.

If you love the whole MGS, then I can't stress enough that you beat that single boss, as the very next Chapter is my favourite two hours of gaming so far this generation - even though it's a slow burner. The story just makes it.
