PostMetal Gear Survive | Four-player stealth co-op game | Err Konami... WOT?

IGN can exclusively reveal Metal Gear Survive, a four-player stealth co-op game set within the Metal Gear universe, due for release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC in 2017.

Set directly after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Survive sees the members of Militaires Sans Frontières not killed in that game’s finale transported through wormholes into an alternate universe, where they’re forced to battle a force of crystalline zombies and, it seems, at least one Metal Gear itself.

“Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements,” said Konami European president, Tomotada Tashiro in a press release, “but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.”

Survive will be the first full Metal Gear game made after the departure of series creator Hideo Kojima, and Konami has been unclear as to how much, if any, of the original Kojima Productions team will be working on the game.

While Big Boss appears at the beginning of the game’s trailer, it remains unclear whether he, the Snake clones, or any recognisable characters from Kojima’s games will appear in the core game. However, Konami does make clear that this is “a new addition to the Metal Gear Solid V experience”.

Konami has revealed few concrete details about the game at this point, barring a teaser trailer (above), but it will be built for four-player co-op play, and will have players using brand new weaponry to fight off enemies. A Konami fact sheet refers to the game as “survival done the Metal Gear way”.

The zombie-like enemies shown are referred to by Konami as “biological threats”, and mention is also made of teaming up to take down “massive threats”, which could potentially be the Metal Gear heard at the end of the trailer.

Going by the trailer itself, the game appears to involve scavenging for resources from the destroyed Mother Base, parts of which have been sucked through and scattered out of the wormholes that transported the game’s central MSF characters.

Survive will use the same FOX Engine that powered both instalments of Metal Gear Solid V. Konami will release more information following Gamescom, and we’ll update you as soon as we find out more.

So you play as wandering mother base soldiers?

If they're using the same mechanics and engine as Phantom Pain then I'll bite.

"This exciting new direction for Metal Gear is proof that Konami were right to send Kojima on holiday!! They've rescued the franchise from a string of poorly-received travesties, developing an incredible new gears-of-stealth-zombie-warfare-silent-resident-rocket-knight-pachinko adventure that the fans will be cheering for! When will we hear about the season pass content?!? DAY ONE!!!"

Wormholes? Seriously?

What desperate strawberry floating committee came up with this?

They were already in MGS V, the wormholes are nothing at all new.

Oh really. Well that alone doesn't surprise me, but using it as a convenient mechanism to shoehorn in something completely different (and generic) is bold, to say the least.

Didn't Konami say recently they wanted to regain their fans trust? They own so many classic properties such as Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Suikoden, Vandal Hearts, Castlevania, Contra, Gradius, Parodius, Twinbee, Sunset Riders and plenty more besides and the best they can come up with is an MP only Metal Gear game with zombies?

Zombie survival games are the big streamer/"influencer" ticket right now; they could do the exact same thing with Silent Hill, Castlevania, Contra etc and get loads of shills to say how good they are on twitch.

At least it might fit Silent Hill or Castlevania but this seems horribly shoehorned in.

This is so bizarre I'm pretty sure it reminds me of the sort of things that happen in dreams.

Ok, so we're on a space craft dealing with an opposing force with some projectile weapons. Sci-fi, sure, but plausible. But no, my brain (in this case the writer) just decides to check out of that boring gooseberry fool, so here's some wormholes (that do exist in space after all) and now we're on a planetary surface in an alternative dimension were there are rock zombies with no faces and giant robots with explosive laser drill arrows / spears our only chance to survive running around this big sphere in total futility while everything has the exact same mechanics because otherwise how could a human cope with what's happening. Except this isn't a dream at all, this is a video game, by Konami, titled Metal Gear, and we're holed up in our dark rooms playing pew pew over this thing called the Internet.

OK then.
