Although the Metroid Prime games are very different from the 2D Metroid ones in my opinion.

Yup - I'll be all over 4 when that comes out. I've played bits of Other M and the first Prime years ago - but didn't complete either. I would love for the rumours of some or all 3 of the first Prime Switch remasters to be true.

Is Super Metroid worth playing? I know lots of people love it but I don't have the nostalgia for it - or would the controls / map system / dead-ends be too much of a devolution after being spoilled with Dread?

I imagine you’d be very spoilt with how manoeuvrable Samus is in Dread, OR has played through Super Metroid recently and had a thread dedicated to it when Dread came out, probably worth looking for that for a modern take on Super Metroid, it’s probably worth trying at least to see how far the series has come.

Just beat Kraid. That’s brilliant boss design. Really tough, but each time I fought him I mastered a bit more of his pattern and which weapons to use.
Still find the being lost aspect anxiety inducing, but I’m generally enjoying it so far. Glad I have started it and hope I won’t get so lost I drop it in frustration. Time will tell.

This is a big theme for the bosses

Yeah they are very well constructed bosses so you always feel like you are learning something and understanding more about how to improve your chances next time. I don't think I ever encountered a point where it just felt like I was banging my head against the wall with a boss that just seemed impossible

This is the thread that got mentioned with my thoughts on my recent first playthrough, but to summarise what probably reads quite critically - it's still a very good game that I enjoyed and am glad I played through!

I really hope that proves to be the case for me too. It (Kraid) was one of the best boss fights I can remember for a long time (granted i dont play many games with "boss" type inserts in).

It seemed to reveal its patterns much more organically than the much lauded ones in Bloodborne did for me (I always felt i fluked those affairs).

I guess that's partly down to 2D being simpler to control and direct.

Thanks mate. Managed my first double evade on an Emmi, and beat it during that run. Felt like a god.

Yeah I had like a 1 in 15 success rate of performing a parry on the Emmi (the later ones were even more unpredictable) but its super satifying when you manage to pull it off

Just made it to the first sizeable information dump (where they villain is first named etc and there is a mini boss fight with a warrior). This is great stuff. I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would.

I still think that for all the QoL improvements (and there are many), you can still end up scratching your head whilst panning around 4 or 5 massive area maps trying to work out where you need to go next. I suppose that is an integral part of the experience though (Fusion not withstanding).

I dunno, I didn't have this experience at all really. I found the game to actually be fairly linear, as it subtly (and at times not so subtly) pushes you in the right direction.

I think its a me problem. I get horribly lost (both in games and in real life) incredibly easily.

Basically I am often unsure if I am supposed to be backtracking to a previous area, if I should be accessing an area via a teleporter or train etc, if a blue area was water (fine) or ice (a no go currently) etc.

I'm not expecting an answer btw, it's just a persistent problem i have with navigating things. It's a lot less stressfull when load times are short (which unfortunatley they are not) or if you can fast travel (which there is no sign of yet).

Great game though.

Alright, I've asked GG if I can post a shameless plugging thread for my printed paperback unofficial game guides, but I've just released my Paperback edition of my Metroid Dread guide. 272 pages long, 45,000 words, around 300 screenshots (I've added a special tickable "collected" box to all item tank screenshots). My guide covers 100% of the game (and a whole lot more besides, such as Sequence Breaking and Speedrunning). Has QR codes to videos, and more.

Definitely my most comprehensive and detailed guide to-date for only £12.99.

Paperback Cover (Can't seem to get the IMG tag to work, so leaving it as a link):

One caveat: The copies printed by Amazon directly (KDP) use Black and White screenshots as printing in colour (with KDP) costs an eye-watering amount just to create. B&W shots aren't as good, but drops the price dramatically (by about 3x the amount). I have submitted full colour paperback and hardback editions to IngramSpark where printing costs are at least more reasonable (but still not cheap) and that allows colour copies to be made available on Amazon (hopefully by the end of this week).

Great video on the animation of the game. Does a good job of going over why the game looks and feels so good to play:

Bit more progress made. My god this uses a lot of buttons in various combinations. I can’t remember the last time I had to actually pause and think about what I needed to have held down to fire a selected weapon in a certain direction.

Good stuff though, and am really enjoying the variety in the world design.

Nice use of HD rumble too. It’s a shame this feature got relegated from so many of the Switch’s offerings, a bit like they did with 3D on the 3DS in its later years.

A while ago I was thinking how nice it would be if we got a new WarioWare, and what great use it would make of HD Rumble.

Then we got one, and... well. It didn't.

Apart from 1 2 Switch I've never noticed HD rumble in any game if I'm honest

Mario Odyssey used it well I thought. And Subsurface Circular. But yeah, it’s been rare.
