I still need to play Iconoclasts, it's been on my wish list for about 3 years now! :fp:

In case of interest to the discussion, Nerrel on youtube has an interesting, detailed three videos of micro-reviews of different modern Metroidvanias:

To my eyes some of the visual styles are pretty great in these 2D Indies, as is some of the innovation. But as said in other thread, still keen on Dread, especially if some cool environments/music starts appearing. I never played Other M but from what I saw it always looked like cold, gunmetal, B-Movie sci-fi and just don't want this to be that.

Also: I don't agree with Nerrel on everything but I like his detail - I've a lot of time for his detailed breakdown of the flaws in the Majora's Mask 3DS remake.

EDIT! This video is probably of relevance too!

Never understood the Hollow Knight hype either, looks like a Newgrounds Flash game to me. Super Metroid really shines by comparison when they're put side by side.

Ori is the one I don't get. It should look pretty, but it ends up looking over-bloomed and a lot of the regions have really unattractive colour palettes. Hollow Knight looks much better.

Hollow Knight is legit beautiful, the artwork is so simple, appealing and cute. I think Ori looks more like a flash game with some of the animations, though I thought the gameplay was rather shallow in comparison.

I'm not like super literate on pixel art and animation but to me it's immediately obvious that something like this:

Is leagues ahead of most animation even just in games that actually get released on the eshop.

(It's harder to find bad examples, because those don't get gifs made of them!)

Also guys! When I first saw Dread Samus I thought her tiny head-long body proportions were a little strange (great shoulder game, though) and it reminded me of the Samus bit in this hoax Nintendo console reveal from years ago - it's still so good! If it was a real console it'd be one of the best console reveal trailers ever.

EDIT ALSO: I think some were wondering where the morph-ball footage is but in the full trailer (may be different from Direct footage) there is morph-ball footage at around 1:26.

Gotta say, not a fan of the visual styles presented in Iconoclasts or Cuphead. Perhaps I'm on Karl's end of the graphics spectrum.

As much as the graphics of this game look underbaked for a modern game, I'm looking forward to this. I can't lie though, I felt some kind of DREAD when I saw Sakamoto in the development history video. I really hope he's kept well the strawberry float away from actual development of this game.

What have you got against Sakamoto? He's literally been involved in the creation of the best Metroid games.

I do hope there's a fair amount of flipping back and forth from 2D to FPS 3D, I think it'd benefit the claustrophobic atmosphere.

If they get it right, it could be like Resi 4's aiming - you get the accuracy and the ability to look.aroind, but the vulnerability of being rooted to the spot. And also with the added blind spots of not being able to see much beyond that small cone of vision in front of you. Could be really tense, if they get the music and sound design spot on.

Also I just stupidly decided to order the special edition on the Nintendo store before it sold out, thinking it would be a scalper's dream and I could always cancel later. Except in my haste I checkout as a guest and now can't seem to cancel.

The rival Karl and Drummy camp probably think this is karma.

£80?! For that price you'd think it would include metroid fusion at least.

Or at least the amiibo. Looks like it's £30 for an art book, steel case and fancy cards
