Visually, I think this looks fantastic.

Well just looking at the Metroidvania genre (one that we've not been short in recently), Hollow Knight is the one they immediately comes to mind. Dead Cells, the Steamworld Dig games, Iconoclasts and Guacamelee all, to my eyes, look much more visually interesting than Metroid Dread.

That's just restricting myself to Metroidvania too. If I can bring up any 2D game, then some ones that spring to mind are Cuphead, Fez, Darkest Dungeon,. Inside, Limbo, Hades (and their other games).

I'll need to look at the Treehouse footage, but what was shown in the presentation just looked bland to me. I think it'll be fine to play, but I wasn't excited by just watching it.

A large part of the art style will be down to it having to switch perspectives. I don't think it's anything amazing myself (I only watched the main reveal though), but it looks good. There's bound to be some more dense and varied areas.

I think it looks good. Not as stunning as something like Ori, but it really works for the type of game it is. And it's at 60fps.

It did look fun but I would rather wait to see what critics say, if you wash the nostalgia from your eyes it is mostly a 2D shooter but I do like that you are being chased Mr X style.

Let's be fair, it could have been any 2D game and slap in Samus and the name Metroid and a lot of you would still have lapped it up ;)

This game looks fantastic graphically. Way more impressive than any indie Metroid clone. Love the 3D bits but looks amazing in normal 2D gameplay too.

It looks better than I was expecting a new 2D Metroid to look in all honesty, but that's more because I had set my expectations low!

There are definitely nicer, or at least more visually interesting, looking Metroidvania games out there in the indie space, but that's why it's nice to have options.

I just hope they use the style they have well for creating atmosphere, which is main thing I need from a Metroid game and which the last entry Fusion did so damned well. I watched this the other day which is a nice breakdown of some of the things the GBA game did so well to create fear and tension in the player:

There's only so much you can do with 2D games, visually, so yeah, the graphics aren't especially important. To me it looks like any other modern 2D game.

That’s quite a reductive view of 2D games is it not? There’s loads of interesting an unique things you can do with the style of a game whether it’s 2D or 3D. Equally not all 2D games look the same at all, you couldn’t compare, say, Hotline Miami 2 or Broforce with Ori or Hollow Knight.

I agree with Parksey, in all honesty. There are numerous games made on a smaller budget which, on the face of things, look a hell of a lot better. However, I’d always just caution that we’ve only seen a very brief release trailer that seems to take place in only one of the game’s areas, so there’s every chance we’ll get a lot more diversity and less blandness going forward.

It's all subjective but fwiw I think this looks good and that all the games Parksey listed look bad.

It probably points more to my lack of experience with modern 2D games. Superficial.

The art style is fine if somewhat clinical and basic for my tastes, but it has absolutely nothing on the animation of Iconoclasts:

Or Cuphead:

Karl has clearly overcommitted to his bit

Cuphead is probably the best of the bunch to be fair, and Metroid just wouldn't work in the Cuphead or Hollow Knight styles. I probably disagree re. Iconoclasts looking nicer.

Iconoclasts is like Owlboy for me - the overall environments can look a bit too tiled and laid out on a grid, but the individual sprite animations are genuinely fantastic. Metroid still has that grid layout and is just a bit bland.

Luckily though the debate I need to win isn't which is better, it's the much easier task of pointing out that every game Parksey mentioned does not look bad ;)

Well true, but 'winning' the visuals debate with Karl is like shooting fish in a barrel, only the fish has the Monty Python Black Knight approach to injury.

Iconoclasts looks like every other indie pixel art game to me. I appreciate it's all personal taste but I'm baffled as to why anyone would think it looks particularly impressive.

To be totally fair I do see why people like Cuphead, but it's not really my cup of tea (ha).

Yeah, I don't get what Iconoclasts is doing so well there.

Cuphead looks amazing though. I've always been too scared to give that a go because I've heard how difficult it is :slol:
