Speed running hard mode will be a bitch to do.

I think hard mode only makes enemies deal more damage, so the rate at which you defeat stuff should be the same. I'm pretty sure dying also reverts your in-game play time back to what it was at the last checkpoint, so for speedrunning in-game hard mode means nothing.

I'm enjoying this. Pacing is spot on, game mechanics are great and its so atmospheric and polished.

Wasn't sure if it would be my sort of thing - platformers are the highest form of art but I often struggle or get frustrated with Metroidvanias. I was worried as Metroid spanned the metroidvania genre it would be everything I dislike about getting lost and backtrack but even more so to justify the AAA price tag. I don't like getting lost and you don't really in Dread; really great video below explaining why you don't get lost how dread gives you the feeling of exploriation without you needing to think to deeply about navigation you're led the right way through clever world design but you don't feel like you are being hand held.

Don't worry, I was only joking because I made the same error on the last page! :slol:

It is a really good channel though, lots of well put together videos that look at interesting aspects of games without all the usual YT nonsense!

I do think that they employ some effective techniques to shepherd the player along the critical path in this, I'm more of a fan of letting the player loose and to hell with it if they get lost, but it's clear they put a lot of work into trying to make this a guided experience without necessarily feeling like it all the time.

I guess I already posted something like this ( ) but yeah, I agree. I think this game has an extremely well designed world. The main path is well signposted, but the game still lets you have moments where you have to think "where do I go next?", and there are rewards for going off the beaten track, culminating in a lot of player choice and nonlinearity if you want to put the experimentation in.

Have you tried watching any videos on YouTube about how to approach certain phases? One thing I did which seemed to help was hop into morph ball mode as soon as he starts to fire out spiked blocks? I have no idea where on him they come from but I found that helped a little. Without saying, I have no idea which bit you’re struggling with though in particular

Yeah pattern recognition and identifying the "tells" for what a boss is about to do are pretty much the key to any bosses in this. Once you work out what they are going to do in each phase then you can pretty much always come up with a strategy to avoid the damage and then wait for the next opening to fight back

Multiple attempts while you learn the pattern and rhythm and tells is standard. Echo Robbo's suggestion on watching others attempt each phase if you're really struggling.

I don’t think I’d have completed it yet if I hadn’t resorted to watching some of the videos on YouTube  Some people are ridiculously good as this game and that alone gave me hope, thinking “if they can beat X with no energy tanks, 15 missiles etc then I can with all the stuff I’ve picked up so far” kind of thing.

Aye, watched videos and I can see what I’m to do, I’m just rubbish and can’t react quick enough.
