So like, have Retro just been sitting on their hands and now have work?

The working theory based on rumours is whatever they did post Tropical Freeze was scrapped and the Starfox Grand Prix development began around 2016. In theory they could be coming to the end of that while starting up development on Metroid Prime 4. So maybe we'll see Starfox (or whatever it is they've been working on) soon.

What I would say is, I don't think Nintendo would take Prime 4 off the development team who were struggling with it and give it back to Retro, if Retro have spent the past 6 years struggling to put something. I think the idea that they're nearing release of something Nintendo have confidence in is much more likely.

Disappointed about this, but it’s definitely the right thing to do. I wonder if we are talking another 2/3 years to get this over the line? Theoretically it could end up missing the switch!

I admire Nintendos honesty here and if anything, it gives me greater confidence that they want Prime 4 to be one of the best. Short term disappointment I can take.

It was clearly always a long way off so I'm not fussed by this. If it means we get a game that lives up to the name then I'm more than happy to wait!

Good on Nintendo for being open about it as well, more of this please!

Well it was due at the end of this year so it is pretty unexpected.

We that ever actually announced though? I thought all we got was confirmation that it was in development and that was it?

I wonder if this would delay any sort of HD Metroid Prime Trilogy release? I bet they wanted to release it about a year before the release of 4 to build up brand awareness.

EDIT: Senior editior of Game Informer has tweeted about this, apparantly the game was being made between different studios around the world. Whilst some were doing just fine others were struggling so Nintendo decided it needed to be done under one roof! Retro pitched their idea for MP4 and Nintendo liked it and here we are.

What a bloody farce

2021 absolutely no chance, 2022 seems unlikely, I’d put my money on 2023. This is now with a studio who haven’t released a game in 5 years and this is the only thing we’re sure they’re working on now.

Who is the Nintendo producer who doesn’t like the Prime games?

Pretty glad I held off buying a Switch. I thought the whole benefit of this thing was supposed to be Nintendo consolidating console and handheld teams so no more software droughts. 2 years in there’s not much sign of that being the case. 2018 was very weak and 2019 isn’t looking much better. Prime was basically the game I was holding out on a Switch for, not sure what will make me buy one now.

Hopefully this brings forward the next Zelda.

E3 will be interesting.

You must have the most boring taste in games if there's nothing on the Switch that interests you  :fp:

I thought the same, but nope - no date announced. Just assumptions from people on the Internet.

I’ve just done my block capital bit at a more nuanced opinion than Kinopio’s up there, so I’ll ignore that one.

I'm shocked, why they just didn't go with Retro in the first place is beyond me.

Well, who knows what Retro have actually been doing. After Corruption came out there was a sense that now was the time for both the developer and franchise to move to something new. I actually liked Other M and would have happily had another one of those but we have actually only had one new Metriod game after Prime 3. There was probably still a sense to try and do something new with it, and Retro themselves might have wanted to not just make a similar game for the fourth time. They did the two DKCR games which were a different step and maybe have been working on that Starfox game.

Perhaps both Nintendo and Retro, when 4 was being planned and commissioned about two-three years ago were happy with it going to someone fresh.

You must have the most unique opinion of what a software drought is.

I wouldn't say there's a drought, but it depends on the other formats you own, there is more games coming to PS4 and Xbox One with 3rd party releases that aren't on switch and while there are plenty on Indie titles, some, like myself get them on PC or the format of their choice. I buy them on PC mainly due to cheaper price.ls and bundles. I think drought is a little on the harsh side when there are plenty of games for the Switch, it's just getting less stuff than the other platforms.

I agree that drought is the wrong term. Personally it's just that what Nintendo stuff is coming isn't necessarily the most appealing stuff to everyone.

The games we do know that are coming this year are a mixed bag for me. I've nothing more than a passing interest in Animal Crossing, which is a series I think did everything it needed to do with the N64/GC original. Fire Emblem is a series I actively dislike. The Yoshi games are charming and fun, but never something I've been interested enough to spend money on. Beyond that we have Pokémon which IS a game I will be getting.

Looking forward to 1 out of 4 big exclusives (That we know of) isn't a great ratio. Indie games are great but the mileage I get from them varies dramatically. So for me the Switch has had an alright 2018, with a "meh" 2019 on it's way. Prime 4 is the only beacon on the horizon (That we know about) for me and that's just zoomed into 2021 at the earliest to be honest.

This isn't to say I dislike the Switch, or I'm unhappy with it. I love the system and it's got some great games, it's just not had anything that's been my "main" game since Mario Odyssey and at least until Pokémon, nothing that I'm really looking forward to. I know it's early, but E3 this year is going to be so important in terms of reviving the excitement I had in 2017.

Ultimately it just feels like so many of the Nintendo franchises I love are either dormant, or are in between main titles right now. We're not getting another main Mario or Zelda anytime soon and stuff like F-Zero and Advance Wars are basically dead at this point.

Pffft. Lightweights. Some of us have been waiting for Pikmin 4 which was meant to be a Wii U game. Not sure we even got a jpeg for that.

From the looks of it, yes. I’ve no idea how many staff Retro actually have, enough to finish off development of one game (if the Star Fox Grand Prix game was actually real or not) while simultaneously starting Metroid Prime 4 development from the start?

Now this has been restarted I can certainly see Metroid Prime Trilogy coming out at some point (if its not already done and they’re just waiting for the right moment) in the near future, would certainly help tide Metroid fans over till MP4 comes out (probably earliest 2021, more like 2022 in my opinion)

I’m think the HD MPT is done and has been for a little while, I bet it was planned to release soon but due to the MP4 reboot it will likely be held back for another year.
