So 2021 release then.

Lots of isolation, lots of different environments, and no gobby NPCs please.

Depends how long the development cycle is, I can't see them completing in just 2 years.

Also begs the question, just what is Nintendo's 2019 2nd half lineup?

The new Pokemon mainline game is supposed to be coming later this year, but I'm not convinced so soon after Let's Go (unless it's by a separate team).

Were any details ever given about the (original) development team? It's just so unusual for Nintendo to let an internal team fail so badly.

Apparently it was Bandai Namco.

It was Bandai Namco, wasn’t it? Or that was what was rumoured.

(Ninja-ed, natch.)

They said after the reveal of Let's Go that the Gen 8 Pokemon was scheduled for late this year, no way the main team were all working on Let's Go. The gen 8 game will probably be running on the same engine as this Game Freak game.

Plus there's still Fire Emblem, Dragon Quest XI, possibly Bayonetta 3 as well. Still plenty of Wii U ports they can do to prop up the release schedule too.

Sad to hear that whatever their initial plans were have fallen through to such a degree that the whole project requires a hard reset. On the other hand, at least we know for a fact it's in safe hands with the folks over at Retro Studios.

I'd also be fascinated to see what gets dredged up (if anything) from the past 2 years of work, even if it's just some concept art or w/e. Nonetheless, this news sucks balls in the short term.

Fair play to them for coming out and saying it was strawberry floated and they're starting from scratch rather than announcing a game and doing strawberry float all for years *cough* Square-Enix *cough*

Gives me time to finally get to Prime 2 and 3. Heck may give enough time for those to get further optimisations on Dolphin!

2021 is optimistic. 2022 is more likely. Could be one of the Switch's last big releases.

Nintendo have plenty lined up this year without MP4. Yoshi and Fire Emblem (hopefully) will be first half lineups but we don't have dates for:

Pokémon
Town
Luigi's Mansion 3
Bayonetta 3
Animal Crossing
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
Daemon x Machina

And that's without considering anything else Nintendo might have to reveal-something from Retro (Starfox GP if you believe the rumours). I suspect they have a few Wii U U ports ready to go as well if they have any gaps needing filling.

100% here for this sort of openness. Great move from Nintendo

It was pretty hard to imagine anyone other than Retro doing a proper Prime game.

Not that my expectations are overly high, since Prime 3 was a bit of a mixed bag. They need to get their priorities straight with this one. If there's going to be a lot more focus on other characters then they have to be interesting. The bulk of the dialogue in Prime 3 ranged from boring to hammy, with an appropriately corny soundtrack as the backdrop (though there are still some good tunes, including Meta Ridley theme which they straight lifted from Prime 1). The Federation were so boring with no nuance at all.

I don't know what the development process was like exactly though. Kinda seems like Retro were pressured into making hypermode, which was broken, a regular feature of the game. So I don't know what other stuff happened behind the scenes.

I remember loving the Skytown theme

Least they were honest, it should've been a Retro lead project from the get go.

Now please Nintendo port the Prime Trilogy to Switch.

At least we got told via the correct way and anyways there was no date said to that game. I going to guess a year delay
