Paid content in videogames (DLC, loot boxes, passes, currencies, "surprise mechanics" and - new! - pay more or wait!)

Anything to do with games at all.

I think the main issues with loot boxes and microtransactions is the stupidly high price some of the packs are, a good example is Avengers with packs priced upwards of £80.
The prices need to be capped imo.

I'd say the main issue with them is that they are massively exploitative.

Ridiculous though they are, I can't help feeling that the government should have other priorities right now.

The government can (and indeed must) do multiple things at a time so it's ok

These consultations take ages for them to go through to be fair, so it's probably for the best they make a start.

I'll be filling it in and telling them I think games aimed at children shouldn't have monetised, psychologically addictive elements in them.

Only if you want them to allow loot boxes on principle

Then when they come back with a definitive answer, they discard it because the results were skewed by people voting in favour of the side they support.

EA under fire for promoting FIFA loot boxes in toy catalogue.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ ... -catalogue

the publication in question is the latest in-store magazine from UK retailer Smyths Toys, which featured an advertisement for FIFA 21 centred around the Ultimate Team mode.

The ad listed the four steps of playing Ultimate Team, with step two being "Use FIFA Points to open packs."

EA are literally promoting gambling to children.

Quicker this gets regulated the better.

Not looking to white knight EA here, but shouldn't Smyths be taking some responsibility if it's their on in-house catalogue?

I think most retailers just set aside space for adverts in their publications, and then the client provides the advert itself. Granted Smyths should have at least proof-read it - or contacted EA with any concerns - but I think it falls back to EA here. I suspect whoever was proofing the ads for Smyths isn't necessarily into games so they wouldn't know the specifics of obtaining Fifa fun-bucks.

Bit of blame on both sides, but mostly with EA.

So 2K added unskippable advert videos into NBA 2K21 a month after it launched (i.e. after reviews had been published) and fans of the game were angry about it... and now 2K has said that this was a mistake.

twitter.com/NBA2K/status/1318618431848026112

Sounds like they'll be removed (or made skippable?) for pre-game but maybe left in for post-game. I love how 2K's tweet mentions adverts appearing in their games almost as if it's nothing to do with them; as if the ads appeared by themselves and 2K are fighting on behalf of players to limit how and when they appear  .

You have to laugh. ‘How did those adverts get into these parts of this game that we put out and are responsible for?’

Who could have guessed that people would find unskippable adverts annoying?

I'm fine with adverts in sports game when they are on the pitchside hoardings or on the players shirts. That's accurate.

I certainly don't want the "realism" of advert breaks like I'm watching Sky Sports
