What I take from the dearth of games and new IP is that the next box will definitely be with us next year. Lots of MS's internal studios have been quiet for quite some time and one imagines that they are busy getting their games into shape for the launch of the next box, hence a natural lull in output.
The simple truth may be that if we are now entering the 18 month countdown for the release of nextbox, the now large install base and consistent 3rd party support will likely sustain the 360 at a decent level for a good 24-36 months yet, even without too many big name 1st party IPs from MS. Factor in an agressive price cut and you can see that in this sense MS can afford to move its focus elsewhere whist still seeing the 360 off into a graceful retirement instead of being dragged out the back and shot after the fashion in which the original Xbox met its end.
Of course the nextbox could be on for a 2014 release in which case my 360, easily my most played console this gen, may just start to gather dust this time next year.
Good post, I've been saying a similar thing for a while.
