Microsoft acquire ZeniMax Media. Sounds like everything will be exclusive to Game Pass platforms.

Anything to do with games at all.

Where are you playing exclusive Bethesda games in the future?

I can still see the biggest titles releasing, TES 6, Starfield and Doom sequels as it’ll just be extra cash to claw back spending that much on them (although that might not be a lot to Microsoft ), everything else would be a probable no, plus with Games Pass you get all of their previous games (I’d definitely get around to at least trying Oblivion for example) which the PS5 won’t have as part of a £11 per month sub.

This, I really don't understand how people don't see this it's really simple.

It could well happen but the re-release of Skyrim sold about 3.36 million on PS4 compared to 1.83 million on Xbox One according to VG Chartz (I have no idea how accurate they actually are though), while a new release would sell much better on either platform they might just want to edge their bets with such a huge game to get maximum profit from it and to me that’d mean having it one Games Pass and on sale physically and digitally on all the platforms it can run on. Timed exclusive for Xbox/PC is very likely if it does release on all possible platforms in my opinion.

I agree, this purchase is for exclusives, not multiformat releases.

There may be a game or two which buck the trend, but these franchises are Microsoft owned now and you'll need a PC or XBOX to play them.

The ones which are multiplatform will be tasters. A little like Horizon Zero Dawn coming to PC shortly before a sequel is announced for PS5. It's just there to tempt you in. If Minecraft ever sees a full blown sequel, Microsoft will be wise to keep it exclusive too. They are playing a long game.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

"Microsoft are going third party" is one hell of a take from this news.

There's more to Sega now than their nostalgia IPs though. They've been putting out consistently great Yakuza games for 15 years, for example.

I take it all back, I have bought Yakuza Kiwmai of the PS store and 10 hours in and yes it's great! Think I prefer this to Red Dead 2 and GTA in terms of gameplay.

With all these studios now owned by Microsoft it'll be interesting to see how they handle release dates.

Do they spread them out or just have Cristmas domination with about 10 games all released in a month or so?

They will spread them all out, Phil wants big games dropping every 3-4 months.

Avowed, Elder Scrolls 6 and Fable I reckon will be released with 6 months between them at least.

From a new interview with Phil Spencer:
“Is it possible to recoup a $7.5 billion investment if you don’t sell Elder Scrolls VI on the PlayStation?” I asked.

“Yes,” Spencer quickly replied.

Then he paused.

“I don’t want to be flip about that,” he added. “This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games. But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us.

Massive Phil Spencer interview with Gamereactor.eu on the Bethesda acquisition.

https://www.gamereactor.eu/phil-spencer-on-exclusivity-monetisation-and-game-development/

Edited quote that I interpret to mean, making a game exclusive to Xbox won't neccessarilly mean gamers from locked out platforms will then go and buy an Xbox to buy it. Also, the meaning of 'Xbox' has shifted to mean Xbox account not Xbox console.

In terms of exclusivity, how do you view it in general? Aren't there certain perks or advantages for studios to work solely on one or two platforms, and providing value for said platforms?

Phil Spencer: The fact that we sell our games on PC does undermine one of the value propositions in that it doesn't force somebody to go buy our console. Our high-level goal inside of our team, of how we measure ourselves, is how many people are playing on Xbox. And when we say 'playing on Xbox' it doesn't mean an Xbox console. It means somebody who is logging in and playing a part of our ecosystem, whether first-party or third-party. And it could be on an Android phone. It could be on a Switch. It could be on a PC. That's how we think about it.

Looking forward to playing Fallout 5 on my phone rather than on PS5 :datass: .

My phone is ancient 2G so I won't actually be playing anything on it.

And yet ironically when the nuclear war does hit and forces us all into Fallout style underground bunkers your 2G phone will probably be one of the few pieces of technology that remains operational!

I do like the sound of much of what Spencer has been saying lately though, thinking beyond a single platform and having more interest in just getting people playing is absolutely the right way of thinking IMO.

Jawa, with the power of GamePass, you could be tweaking your Fallout 76 base on your phone! Though you'd have to upgrade the phone... and as Jenuall points out, maybe keep the old phone and rule the actual post-apocalypse as wielder of the only working phone.
